Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

The idea that layoffs target low performers is a myth

It's frustrating when people claim layoffs are about performance. My whole department, from the VP down, got cut in the last round. We had strong reviews and bonuses to show for it. Sometimes it's just pure cost cutting with zero regard for who actually does good work. Spreading that performance narrative just kicks people when they're already down.

@d6 do you personally know OP and what department they were in?

I’m agreeing with the comments here but I’ve seen low performers get cut though before but most of the time it’s pay and someone who’s got a vendetta for you.

I’ve seen mostly higher bands plus older and the occasional low to mediocre thrown in to balance things out. It’s really a box filling task after the boxes have been created with less boxes at each level. It’s not spreadsheet driven but names in boxes driven. Leftovers get canned. Sort of like musical chairs.

@d4
independent thinker and not an a-s kisser -> cut
too competent and might compete with the manager -> cut

You and your dept were unnecessary in the first place.

Proven fact that Excel spreadsheets are just sorted by salary descending and that’s your list. Now remove any VP favorites. Now add in ages (although like @bw said those are sometimes already covered in a higher salary).

Now “be a go getter manager” and sweepingly get rid of whole departments to prove to your boss you made cost savings…. super eyeroll here.

So yeah… performance plays quite literally zero part on this.

…and this is the reason for a union folks. Would you pay 1% of your salary to introduce a 3rd party into the equation to prevent Nike from doing this? One with all the legal resources to fight for you?

Or do you trust Nike?

Over three layoff cycles I've seen exactly one low performer removed. It's the exception and not the norm though

Layoffs are sometimes an excuse to remove poor performers.
