Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How much time I got left?

I started at Verizon when I was 21. I’m 36 now 15 years in and I’ve never felt more afraid of losing my job than I do right now. I’m a top performer, but none of it seems to matter anymore. This new CEO is coming for everyone, and morale is trash. At this point I don’t even know if I should keep grinding or just stop trying, because this company clearly has zero loyalty. If my hard work means nothing, why should I put in any effort at all? Anyone else feeling the same?

There is no such thing as job security, and never has been unless you’ve been delusional. Grow up and get over it.

Corporations these days have CEOs who care little about the employees. I don't want to call it a union, but there needs to be equal representation at a corporation for non-executive-level employees, effectively making 2 CEOs with different affinities: one to shareholders like Dan and another that represents the best interests of the company and employees. If you have a CEO like Dan in charge, it will be unpredictable and a continual lack of common sense in decision-making, and the employee will never feel secure.

I always thought that, as an employee, you could protect your future by performing well, positioning yourself in growth areas within the company. That doesn't even work any longer.

@ac d-mb comment. $130B last year clearly not extinction, restructuring for new market, times are changing buttercup. I hate that people lost their jobs, especially those caught in business units that are likely divesting. The rest were likely disliked, low performers, or just caught in a numbers game.

32+ years with the company and I wouldn’t change a thing. Were there turbulent times, bad leadership decisions, and d-mb as--s getting promotions? Sure, but what company doesn’t have that. overall this company has been amazing to work for in my career.

I just hope in the next reduction they elect to offer a targeted voluntary vsp for 25+ yrs service with a 3-6mo leash. Would be way better PR move and would promote the peaceful transfer of knowledge. Could easily get another 10-12% off the books.

Jobs, especially jobs with a large corporation do not have loyalty. It's just not part of the equation. It is an exchange. You are expected to work and do a good job, and in exchange, they pay you well and have pretty good benefits that allow you to increase your knowledge and skills. Take full advantage of the exchange so you are prepared whether you are retained or let go in the future.

Verizon is outdated telecom dinosaur on its way to extinction. Get out on your own terms while you can. This company has made it very clear it treats its employees like garbage. Many companies layoff employees but the way it’s handled at Verizon and the frequency perpetuates a highly toxic and competitive environment.

Getting laid off su-ks, even if you want to leave. It is a weird psychological event. VZ has had big layoffs before. Anyone in the tech industry that was around for the Internet bubble knows the bloodbaths that happened then. Entire companies closed shop overnight. VZ is known for layoffs. They have laid off 100s of 1000s of employees over the last several decades. Nobody is every safe at a job. If you feel you are, you aren't you never were. We have just had a few decades of good times, so there are a bunch of people out there that may not have experiences times like these before. If you weren't prepared financially this is a wake up call. Save, have an emergency fund close to a year if you can, live well within your means. If you are in your 30s, times like these will likely happen 1 or 2 more times at least in your career.

Welcome ro Corporate America reality folks!

It's a pretty decent way to make a living when things are going good, but when turbulence hits watch out.

That being said, it's 100% your choice to work in these types of positions or not.

I have been with Verizon for 17 years. I seriously believed I was going to be let go due to the number of years I have been working (long enough), and the amount of pay (decent enough due to the years of working). Interestingly enough, this time of massive layoffs, it seems they are going after the numbers, not necessarily how long you have been with the company. My colleague with less than 5 years has been let go instead of me... Some new people who were hired this summer were let go..

They do not care about the performance or loyalty. I have learned this over the years through various layoffs, requests, etc.

I do my work obviously, but do not go above and beyond. Why would I need to do that? Just take advantage of the system which is this corporate machine, and squeeze the money from them as much as possible.

I got laid off. I had only been at Verizon for a few months. But even if I had survived, I think I would be updating my resume and putting feelers out there for a new job.

I’ve been working for more than 25 years and I’ve been at several different companies. Never in my life have I witnessed such a bloodbath. The whole company paralyzed in fear about losing their jobs. It really felt like a Verizon hunger games! I just don’t think I want to be at a place where I have to constantly feel anxiety

Just laid off with a similar background. Leading 5 times, promoted 4 times, many awards and national recognition. Your manager is all that matters. Do your job but don’t think doing anything extra will save you if your manager is clueless or lazy,

Stop crying. Working anywhere is a choice. If you don't like it just quit and find a job somewhere else
