Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Anyone else have a managing engineer who does neither managing nor engineering?

We got a new ME about 18 months ago. Since then, I've spoken to him like once. Meetings are cancelled or he just never shows up. There are no 1 on 1's. My year end scores might as well be a lottery as my ME has no idea what I am up to. We're being deluged with work from all sides (especially from CEME teams who are a fu--ing disaster and think they run the company) and having to manage it ourselves. We're being given no protection. I don't think he's in charge of any other teams, so I'm struggling to see what he actually does on a day to day basis.

Anyone else seeing a complete lack of leadership at the lower levels?

No MEs are coding. Haven’t met one yet lol. The ones I’ve talked to were blunt in that they aren’t and I gathered they think it’s a load of bull themselves. As far as getting engagement from your manager I’ve had similar experiences in the past. Setup the 1-1 and set your expectations. You have that power.

In my experience, managing engineers usually fall into one of three buckets.

Good engineers, bad managers.
Bad engineers, good managers.
Bad engineers, bad managers.

I have a managing engineer who is a good engineer but a weak manager. I think the DPMs are a waste. Anyone on the non-technical leadership side are worthless. ST Clair and Z are completely worthless. Seen alot of good talent leave this blue dumpster for something better. Everyone I talk to outside this place laughs at the product model. Sad thing is the sh-t stains all get golden parachute when they leave to ruin another company while everyone else is left to cleanup their mess.

Not in engineering but I have not talked to my leader since early February and she emailed us our merit sheets. I thing the bi--h is logged in maybe 2 hours a day and maybe does half of that time in actual work.

And the heffer is making 6 digits a year to be a cantankerous worthless c-nt.

I would take the initiative to setup the 1 on 1's, and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out then reach out to the Lead Engineer.

Totally, according to the OBD "literature" the ME/DPMs are supposedly SMEs in their product knowing them inside and out, living and breathing code. So that's what they're apparently doing.

In reality they sit in constant meetings with other ME/DPMs for hours on end, doing murals, barely saying a word lest the truth of their ignorance is revealed. When something needs to be done or said they'll IM the person who is the actual SME and then pass that off as their own knowledge.

Obviously this important work takes precedent over any team considerations.

So everything is being decided and done second hand. Hence the utter mess we're currently in.

Actual leadership and employee management is an afterthought if you're lucky.
