Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Moving states- is it possible to get remote exeception?

Live in NJ, but due to. life circumstances will be moving to TN. Is it possible to ask for an exception to be remote? Been with the company for 4 years and got a promotion recently, if any of that matters. Anyone have any experience or know of others that were in a similar position?

@g5 exactly. cb here.
It would cost TIAA literally nothing and me roughly $25K to have moved to NJ as I was willing to pay my own way to stay with TIAA… - for what it’s worth they offered me $50K to move to Frisco. Charlotte was the same but neither city was right for me (visited both several times.

I’m not really sure why they said no other than the slight chance they’d have to pay me more in the NJ/NY market instead of Texas. I can’t speak for Charlotte as I’m not sure what COL is there but Texas would have more than tripled my CO property taxes.

It’s probably control. They wanted Frisco and couldn’t get it so offered Charlotte to keep me. At least they offered Charlotte. I am not the only one in Denver that got sc--wed wanting to go anywhere else but Texas, and some didn’t get an option to relocate.

I am smh at your story...can't understand why TIAA didn't let you do that....I'm not proud of the place I work for sometimes.....also lost a lot of friends and co-workers from the Denver closing....talent being let go is enormous....

@a3 doesn’t hurt to ask. Good luck but be prepared for them to say no.

15+ year Denver gal here with a pretty important role. Was only offered Frisco only and I asked to move to NJ on my own cost and work from the NJ or NYC office 4 or 5 days a week but was told no and they countered with relo to Charlotte instead which I also declined. In two weeks I’ll be happily gone from this awful place.

@bh if you’re a corporate employee, they won’t let you work in a wealth mgmt office.

Give it a try but plan for your next move. There are a few WM offices there if you can work there few days a week. Not sure what part of TN moving too. TIAA does not like remote as a persona, they would rather have people in office even 4 days a week if possible. That's why I tend to think it may not get approved.

@af this was my experience as well. I can only imagine juggling all of that AND having a special needs child.

TIAA’s loss!

@aj dependent on the office I went to but main drivers were primarily cost and then convenience.

It was a 4 hour one-way drive so I elected to fly as it was just easier, cheaper and less risk of accidents/wear and tear on my vehicle.

I wouldn’t recommend choosing to super commute willingly. I was spending between $3500-4000 a month on airfare, hotels and food - and none of it was tax deductible. Plus, the amount of time spent actually planning travel and looking for the best rates was tedious.

Luckily, my team and manager were extremely supportive and understood my plight. Unfortunately, TIAA just didn’t care to try to make it work.

@ac

How long was the super-commute?

Nope. If we’re wrong let us know, but I tried in 2025. I had a baby with extremely special needs, and her specialists were all located in another city. My husband also happened to get a new military assignment to that city. Everything was telling us to move to DC. Except TIAA - it’s their way or the highway, even if it’s totally outside of your control, or your child needs life-saving care and treatment elsewhere. They don’t care. So we took the highway.

Won’t matter what the circumstance is, they won’t accommodate.

I tried, my manger tried (L3), and their manager tried and the answer was no. Ended up super-commuting to an Hub office (on my own dime) for a year until I found a role outside of TIAA.

Absolutely not. TIAA HR will not approve that.

Many people have tried to get exceptions and been denied.

I wish you all the luck. Lately the company has made personal choices that benefit itself, Or so it thinks. I hope you get the exception.

I don't know any personally, but I do have a few people on my team that are remote despite living near an office. I think they were grandfathered in when the comapny went remote a few a years ago during covid.

However, I have heard of a few people who tried to do this when the Denver office closed and they were told that had to move to Frisco, so I don't know how likely that is now.

It doesn't hurt to ask. If they value you, they will make an exception. I know of an example a couple years ago. It may help if you offer to spend a week at Frisco/Charlotte once per quarter.
