Why the layoffs now? Did they waste too much money buying part of Tik Tok?

helping his motherland
Israel?
LE is in a 'build a legacy' phase and he's trying to ensure he has a place in heaven. so, helping his motherland and ensuring pro-palestinian chatter is blocked on tikitoki is his main priority right now. for once, it's not $$$ for LE. the same goes to him buying cbs & paramount. hope it pans out well for him as his clock is ticking and no amount of plastic surgery and blood transfusion will help him in the long run
@d3 "Spend 14 Billion on a social media app and then fire your own staff? Seems they couldn't afford this purchase."
LE did it to su-k up to the orange felon so that little Davie can get approval to add more acquisitions to his growing media empire. Trying to out do the Murdochs as a backup in case the AI thing doesn't pan out.
There always have been layoffs, so that the employees could pay for the acquisition. From Sun to today ... we pay

@bj,
You're stup.d. Oracle doesn't build (or own) data centers at all any more. All they do is rent more rackspace from Equinix.

I know. And THEN what? Start this madness all over again? What is Anthropic doing? Are companies lining up to build datacenters for them? Anthropic is busy releasing job-ki-ling apps. What does OpenAI have besides ChatGPT?
@bg The real story is not the agreement with OpenAI but rather a palpable fear that if other hyperscalers build out AI, data will move to those hyperscalers leaving Oracle offerings behind and irrelevant. Oracle also has a quiet push towards multi cloud.
However Oracle “strategy” is poorly thought out by those who are compensated well above my grade and quite frankly they do not seem very bright at strategy.
@bg the data center investment is funny because it’s going to become obsolete. Nvidia is going to leapfrog the tech they are installing today.
What about manual QAs roles in EMEA? Will they be affected?
They say they are building data centers. It’s not going to cost anywhere near as much as they are talking because, shhhhhh, they are actually building detention centers - and those don’t need the cooling.
Just like the waste of money that is the datacenter they want to build for OpenAI.
I'm still trying to figure out why O and other companies are committing hundreds of billions of dollars for OpenAI datacenters.
Yes, they did.
