Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

The layoff set me free

When I got the news that I was being laid off a few months ago, I expected to be devastated. Instead, I felt a wave of relief. Dell has been a mess for too long and I hated my job for far too long. I don't know if I got lucky or the job market is not that bad, but I had a new role within two months. Smaller company and much better culture. Just wanted to say, it's not all bad.

the pay at Dell is actually pretty good the only bad is the politics and lack of merit based achievement where no matter how good you are it doesn't matter if you lack their desired packaging. The leadership can't do the jobs of the the folks they 'manage' mostly are nepotism hires and folks who couldn't make it on the phones.

I remember when I got laid off from Dell. Some Korean dude was stealing all my work and claiming it as his own. To his defense, he openly told me... "Never trust a Korean". I thought he was being sarcastic. Never the less, I was cut and it could not have been a better oppurtnity. Dell is extremely toxic with all the back stabbing. I smiled when I got my severance and I had another job the next week. Dell culture is terrible.

I was part of the big round of layoffs in Aug 2024. Hiring seems to be picking up for a good number of career fields but not all. Biggest advice I can give is don't assume Dell has given you the right skills to be attractive to companies. Please ensure you are upskilling with what's in demand and leveraging every AI tool to harden your resumes.

@e8 Don't know if that's meaningful in any way since I'm sure it all heavily relies on local rules and regulations. You're probably better off asking people in your own location if anyone has successfully negotiated anything to get a feel of what's possible or not in your situation. That's what I did as well.

@af please tell how you negotiated your severance package? it’s definitely something I’ve looked into for when the time comes cause most of us know the time is gonna come at some point

@bf

Don't do that. Unless it's official offer company wide/HR. Quiet quit while searching for new gig.

The only negotiation is to volunteer for it. We're all in a line and for the fortunate, ok to cut the line.

@af - can you elaborate on negotiating the unnegotiable severance?

Same. While I just started searching for new jobs, my initial response was not anger, discontent or anything like that. It was pure relief of not having to thing having to live out the live action version of survivor and guess/talk/speculate who would be voted off the island next. I did what I needed to do, negotiated my severance (although it was "non-negotiable" :D) and even if the future is currently uncertain I feel less stress over that than I felt over the last 3-4 years at Dell.
