After Dell WFR'ed me in the summer, there were a few things that I wish I had done while i was still at Dell.
1st. Get your resume in great shape. Subscribe to one of those AI tools that will analyze your resume. Put in the serious hours on this step while you are still at Dell.
2nd. Get your linkedin profile refreshed and get in the habit of engaging there (I found it to be pretty worthless, but it's something)
3rd. Literally start applying to jobs while you are still employed. Most of them go absolutely nowhere, but it is vital to find out where you and your Dell skills fall short of what is in the market. You need to realistically identify your gaps and work on closing them and having great stories. The way Dell has operated and "career pathed" people is out of touch with a lot of the job market. You need to know what you are up against out there.
4th. Build your STAR stories database for every line item on your resume and every type of role / skill. Refine it until it's second nature.
5th. Build a great story / narrative to be prepared to recite in an interview. The opening part of interviews tended to be a "tell me about yourself" and "why are you here" type question. Have a damn good one that paints a picture of you on a journey. Leverage good ideas like storytelling techniques and narrative frameworks.
6th. Disentangle from Dell. Clean up old login accounts. Go ahead and cash out any of those stupid a-s award points (yes, I won a bunch of awards right before I was WFRed)
Start right now. Don't wait until you get laid off.
