Thread regarding Alteryx layoffs

What do we think about Ben C?

So much has changed in product, and it seems quite a few people chose to make a quick exit. Those who are staying, what do you think about him?

AlteryxOne is nothing but a cash grab. Pre-existing customers are being held hostage to upgrade from server to cloud.

For what essentially is a cloud run desktop engine accessing their data on-prem, where server had direct access.

Company is going to be laying off a massive number of employees to improve cashflow.

Yeeeeeeah…..the results department is a work in progress …… give The Beard a little more time …… if we don’t see really cool stuff by Inspire, then we’ll know the verdict on that one …..

'no other company wants to touch you.'

Bro/sis,

I got four meetings a week, 'bout three hours total.

I'm pullin' in more cash than a surgeon just by rollin' outta bed.

@bnk Clean house. It's almost 2026. If you've spent more than 3 years at this place it means your resume is junk and no other company wants to touch you.

@b4m , not just on product – engineering too. Some folks have been around so long they’ve gotten too comfortable in a cozy nest. After failure on top of failure, people lost their edge and are now just collecting a paycheck. A real reset is overdue if we want to get moving again. Bring in new blood, and make sure we don’t let them slip into the same rut as some of the older engineers have.

Love me some Ben C. Big, huggable teddy bear.

Ben is awesome. Don't know why such non-love is being expressed here. Perhaps because you long-time product folks are getting your apple carts upset? YOU, yes YOU long-timers are the ones who have failed Alteryx, by not innovating and keeping up with competitors. Product at Alteryx has been thoroughly out-maneuvered by both large companies and smaller companies alike. Much of the company's problems rest on YOUR shoulders, product mangement team.

A lot of snark here, but BenC is doing a great job, and no one can refute the fact that Product is moving in some exciting new directions under our new leadership guidance.

Certainly a far cry from our previous leadership, where no one (even the CPO) knew anything technical about the product, at all.

OMG BenC.

Another slow-motion trainwreck in PE is happening. Good folks have bailed already, many others are well along in interviewing elsewhere.

Crisis is afoot, and leadership doesn't even know it !

I am exceeding expectations despite slacking the fu-k off.

I was asked to do more since it is obvious. I asked for a raise. Nope.

Do we have any product engineers in north america anymore?

Steve Jobs pointed out that the difference between an average software developer and the best can be as high as 50:1 or even 100:1, far exceeding the talent disparity observed in most other professions like cooking or driving (or marketing).

PE execs don't understand that or care, it's not in their playbook on how to leach off as much as they can for themselves, & u can't expect marketing to polish a tu-d.

A number of people are leaving. This dude brought them over the line of “I need to leave this place, now”.

Someone in PE did not do their homework when they decided to hire him.

Why would anyone downgrade from Microsoft, to Alteryx unless the compensation package is that good (it isn’t)? Any average performer at his title at Microsoft can easily get another similar, or better offer. Even in this job market.

@1pw No clue, but look at his LinkedIn. He just got into Ai last year. 😭

C-Level execs role will be replaced by Ai.

Think about it.

@17f for one, he actually doesn’t know AI beyond a 30 second google search. Actually sometimes the things he says suggest less.

@b2 exactly what kind of “hard skills” do you expect from a c-suite? Honestly asking.

It's entirely reasonable, and expected, that the current product team doesn't like any new or incoming product people, simply because they want to protect the status quo: cushy, high-paying jobs with little responsibility, little accountability, and folks with little relevant expertise and experience to grapple with the key tasks at hand and challenges that Alteryx product has.

The technical chops of about 80% of those in positions of product leadership is honestly, laughable when compared to both our direct and indirect competitors.

So, down-vote all you want, but change is coming, and it may not be kind to all of you AYX status-quo-ers out there in product-land.

@10w

I don’t think prior and holdover product lacked experience or organization and still failed. In fact this new group is an obvious downgrade talent wise, so don’t be so sure of the turnaround.

Ben C is great. He's bringing order to a product house that really needed some experience and structure -- and vision.

It's not a bad thing that product leaders are bailing out. They've had it pretty cushy for the past 5+ years, basically not doing much of anything and not having the needed experience to 1) execute a cloud transition, and 2) actually help bring product strategy to a differentiated point and getting AHEAD of the market and competitors, instead of playing catch-up all the time.

We can all expect many more product leaders to be leaving in the coming months, and as the new generation of product leaders comes into the company starting this summer. Stay prepared for continuing change, product peeps !!

@OP the reason people are bailing at the Director level and above is because once new VPs come in, they will bring in their own directors and clean house

Why are so many product people bailing out so suddenly ??

He reinforces the fact yet again, that compensation is tied to how well you connect with people, not how technically strong you are.

He is a likable person, but I wouldn't trust him anywhere near a c-suite role with his hard skills.

He’s serving heartthrob vibes so hard, I need a lawyer for emotional damages.

Can't wait to see how that translates to our product.
