Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Help me please

Laid off 2 months ago after 28 years with UHG. Devastating! All internal positions I apply for, immediately “they are pursuing other candidates more qualified”. WTH? I’m even applying for job grades lower than when I left & still the same responses.

I’m over 50, was let go as a grade 29, had all 4s & 5s rating every single year. Had a 5th level interview and they chose an EXTERNAL candidate for the role.

Are any employees getting re-hired? Any tips or resources you have?

Any suggestions for companies hiring Optum employees? I appreciate any insight or referrals.

The thing that makes those of us over 50 end up on a layoff list also allows the company to bypass you when applying after the fact. They know your age. Out of 15 people I personally knew were laid off and 14 of the 15 who were over 40 and who reapplied, there was only one girl(ex-manager) under 40 who was rehired. She also had a director actively helping her find a position. Look elsewhere.

You know how bad all this sounds, how is the word on the street not loud and clear, UHG su-ks! No one should come here to work simply because of their sh---y raises and horrible medical benefits!

@aj unfortunately you can the just learn a tool n get a job. Anyone can use a tool. Learning to build an AI application using framework's and programming is what will get you a job but even that's being offshored.

@cf every company is. Even the local HVAC companies customer service goes to Philippines. So essentially going by your advisor the person can never apply to any company in America

@OP I would look elsewhere. You will have better luck. I wasted a lot of time trying to find internal roles too.

@OP My suggestion is to stop applying for jobs at a company that's bent on dumping as many onshore positions as possible.

I was let go to. I made it through multiple internal inteviews with no offer, but got an external position. Getting redeployed will not save you from future layoffs. You time is better spent looking outside Optum.

@OP Forget about Optum. Start learning as many popular AI tools as possible and put it on your resume. And start applying for jobs online. Spread the word you're looking for a job through your connections on LinkedIn.

@OP I know exactly how you feel. I was laid off after over 30 years with the company. I am in your age bracket as well. I was applying for anything my thought process was I just wanted to come back UHC/Optum was like home in my mind and I wanted to go home. Sounds pathetic looking at this now but thats how I felt. But I started applying outside of the company and now I work for a competitor and I make more and most importantly I am happy here and not stressed as I was under UHC/OPTUM. UHC/Optum was like a bad relationship that I didn't realize how bad it was until I had been out of it for a while. It will be okay. ❤️

Sadly, they rarely hire back people who were laid off. Everyone I know from past layoffs have an experience like you are describing. My advice is to look somewhere else.
