Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Contractor at Conoco – Am I Sc--wed?

I’m a contractor at ConocoPhillips. My contract was recently extended for a year, but with all the layoff talk, I’m wondering if that means anything at all.

Be straight with me:

Are contractors the first to get cut?

Does a contract extension mean anything, or can they still drop me tomorrow?

What are the odds I get let go—50/50? Higher?

Do contractors get any warning, or do they just shut off your badge and you're done?

What have past layoffs at COP been like—slow and quiet or sudden and brutal?

Trying to figure out if I should be worried now or just wait for the axe. Any insight from people who’ve been through this would help. Should I start looking for a new job NOW? Thanks.

Only contractors that are safe are MSP’s.

Yes. You're just a contractor.

It all depends on who gets the kickback. That game has been played for years in the EagleFord.

No way. You’re the safest one in the company. Go ahead, make that big purchase! You have nothing to worry about!

@b3 Why should COP care for a contractor? That is the reason the company hires contractors, so they can grow and shrink on a moments notice without going through severance, EOIs, etc. The company seems to want to outsource more in many groups (specifically IT), but I have heard say that contractors are the first to go.

during COST, contractors got let go and even FTEs, but then those FTEs were the first to reappear as contractors 12 months later.

To OP, you should begin to plan for a quick exit. If you want stability, find yourself a job direct with a company, not temp labor. There are many benefits to being able to roll on and off of companies quickly, that is your value.

It is hard to tell, but it is promising to get a year extension on your contract. Ask you agency about the likelihood of the contract being shortened? Also, most likely they need you set of skills and it isn't found internally. However, with layoffs you never know what direction things will go

ConocoPhillips cares nothing for you. I know. Leave as soon as you can and take your talents elsewhere. This company is toxic.

You're a contractor. If you wanted security I would have been looking for that a long time ago.

Whether you're the first to be cut depends. They're looking for ways to cut costs so if your function is determined to be unnecessary or we're paying too much for you, then yes, you're at risk. On the flip side if your function replaces functions that are done in house for cheaper, hey, maybe they'll keep you
