Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

The layoffs have started

I was just informed, unexpectedly, that four members of my team will be laid off next week as part of company-wide reductions. While my line of business isn’t directly tied to Ambetter Marketplace, it’s clear that the broader organizational cuts are now beginning to impact multiple areas.

@eq They may also increase performance requirments if they have time - so they can walk you out on their term.

@19f Michael F. Neidorff, RIP, was making $25 million a year, while some engineers were getting paid far below that. The CEO is an important position, but what executives get paid and how much value most of them actually bring is questionable. Many good innovative initiatives were blocked due to those ten coffees a day; the important ones do nothing but imitate work. I worked there from 2019 to 2021. Fire all of those useless Scrum Masters (Tom F.) —they're so unnecessary that you won't even notice they're gone. They should at least learn something about technology.

@16h I work in Corporate Services, so I'm fairly removed from the core business operations and major loss centers. But even in a support function this far from the front lines, we're feeling the impact—which really signals how deep and widespread the restructuring and layoffs are likely to be. I’ve heard from a reliable source in another department that they’re also planning to conduct layoffs on 7/31. It sounds like multiple parts of the organization are being affected on that same date

The first place to consider cuts should be at the top. In 2024, Sarah London received total compensation of $20.6 million. Reducing her compensation by just half could preserve the jobs of approximately 206 employees earning $50,000 annually.

I’m hearing that July 31st is likely to be one of the key dates for layoffs and restructuring within our organization at Centene. While not officially confirmed, this appears to be specific to our org. I’ll continue monitoring and will share anything else I learn.

RIFs are tough on everybody, those that get cut and everyone else. I lived through a RIF where the entire company was notified more than three months ahead of a 10% RIF. Cuased so much angst to the entire company. Two years later survived a 7% RIF that was executed without any notice. That was much easier on everyone including the ones that were let go.

Anyone know if the WellCare CM teams will have layoffs?

Obviously some comments are from an employee who thinks they are safe. Just a horrible place to work.

They will never announce layoffs BEFORE it occurs. It’ll be just after it’s done. They don’t want anyone having access to internal systems and data before they’re either gone or being heavily monitored.

The company is in a really bad spot. There aren’t enough bodies to recover much if any of the loss in earnings. They need a win and they need one fast.

@d0 They never announced any layoffs. They keep it hush hush to not create panic and a drop in performance amongst employees. The only time time thry announced it, it wad After it was leaked yesterday the press. To not look bad, they made an official announcement. But since joining the company, 6 yrs now, there were always layoffs, and on a regular basis, at least 2 rounds a year, you just didn't hear about them. Centene had 78k employees in 2020, it is down to 60k now.

@ay then why are we all here swinging in the wind? Why hasn’t she made a statement? She doesn’t lead with empathy. If she did, she would be more transparent. She didn’t say anything about the last large round of layoffs until she had to acknowledge it because it was leaked. She won’t tell us anything this time either. She’s hiding out until the 7/25 investor call

When are people going to pick up on the fact that Centene, like nearly every other large company, has a schedule for RIFs? It happens every 4 months, whether the company is sinking or soaring. It’s a normal business operation and while it su-ks, the alternative is to simply not continuously evaluate the org to ensure it meets the needs of the business. Do some leaders take advantage? Possibly. But HR and legal vet every single request on these cycles and trust me - they say no.

I’m confident that Sarah London is working closely with her leadership team to explore every option for retaining talent. No one takes workforce reductions lightly, and from what I’ve seen, she leads with empathy and puts people first.

Centene’s next quarterly earnings call is Friday 7/25/25. Considering that there has not been a peep made internally about the potential 1.8 billion dollar hit to earnings outside of the initial press release, they’re going to have to do something dramatic to keep the stock from sliding further down assuming they don’t report better than expected results. Would imagine a big layoff would take place if the results are bad as they’re expected to be.
