I was recently speaking with a friend who asked me about JD who she worked under at Bain. After listening to my rant, she expressed surprise that he was focused on DEI at Nike. She said that certainly wasn't the case at Bain as evidenced by the fact that once she became pregnant she quickly learned the company had no maternity policy. I thought JD was always singularly focused on serving his troops? When I mentioned that JD was now the AD at her alma mater Stanford, she just winced.

That's my point exactly. Tying executive pay to DEI targets was extremely common in 2020.
JD wasn't brought in to be the DEI man. He was brought in for mass layoffs, DTC, and modernizing GT. I could rant about all sorts of things that he did, but DEI isn't in the top 10. OP even says their friend was shocked at the idea he pushed DEI.
So what did he actually do in relation to DEI that justified an extended rant (other than being quoted in a press release)?

I'm sure that it wasn't just JD's idea (there was pressure from the board no doubt), but when JD started in 2020, he announced a 5 year DEI plan and tied executive compensation to meeting the DEI targets. This was announced publicly even:

Why would you spend your time with a friend ranting about a CEO that's been gone for a year? And how exactly was he focused on DEI?
There’s a reason our latest tech hub was opened up in India instead of Memphis or Detroit. DEI was never implemented at Nike outside of marketing.
Dude he’s been gone nearly a year move on stop letting him take up your mind space
