Thread regarding Optum layoffs

It feels like the number one rule at Optum is to cover your own back

Whenever something goes wrong, there's a mad dash to point the finger at another team. No one in management ever just owns a mistake. It's exhausting. On top of that, we all know we're being paid well below market rate, and the chance of getting promoted is basically zero. They wonder why morale is so low, but it's not exactly a mystery.

If shareholders knew how pervasive this was all the way at the top they would run. Share price is struggling and our PR teams pump out puff pieces that are widely circulated and reprinted.

Fish rots from the head and SD is the worst of them. All of his directs and a level down are actively doing CYA and it's destroying the company. It's worse than you think

I don't know how many times I have heard direct report management mention in meetings just this:
"You can do a hundred great things, but one mistake will be the thing remembered". Heard that from multiple managers over the years. Some are directors now. Does this sound like a healthy working relationship? If I were living with someone like that I might be seeking a restraining order.

I had a scheduled change that I chose to cancel just before we executed because I saw a problem. Since the change was already approved I got grief from my boss.

God forbit the pilot on your next flight doesn't have the power to cancel it if he sees something wrong with the plane..

Yep, they twist any such admissions into proof that you’re incompetent. Imagine if they put as much effort into doing good work as they do building a dossier of doom on you. The company might still be Fortune 6!

It is really demoralizing. Everyone sc--ws up, even at work, some more than others but no one is 100% perfect all the time. I came in to Optum with the habit of directly owning any mistakes I make directly and frankly. Every other place I've worked, that's always been acceptable, and often has helped me professionally because it builds a reputation for honesty and accountability. Here it's the exact opposite.... if I directly own any sc--wup, no matter how tiny, no matter if it genuinely was my mistake or partially due to someone else, even with my fix or mitigation ready to go, it's seen as an incredibly negative thing. We are being incentivezed to be weasly, dishonest, and manipulative. I hate it. If someone sc--ws up they should just say so so it can be addressed and everyone can learn how to avoid the same thing going forward!!! It's honestly exhausting.
