Retirement vs Resignation

I see many folks hanging around waiting for a severance package. I get that I mean a kicker to go would be ideal especially if you are retirement eligible and this is your last stop in your career. If you have another opportunity outside the phone factory that meets or exceeds current salary/bonus pay and you are not retirement eligible, yet. What do employees gain by achieving retirement eligibility? What would be at risk if you left payroll 3 years before becoming eligible for retirement?

Potential known risks:
3 years of Pension contributions (assuming eligible)
30% service discount
ability to participate in AT&T healthcare plans at your cost 100%

Are there any other meaningful "benefits" at risk by leaving before eligible?

Curious why you think the AT&T Medicare Advantage plan is so great. Original Medicare with Part D and Medigap is so much better! There’s nothing special in that AT&T plan that I can see.

Agreed that people seem to be very happy with this plan. The problem for many is “getting” to age 65.

Most that are cut and “retire” are in their 50’s. You have to figure something out until you get to 65. And the AT&T coverage that they “allow” you to participate in at 100% cost to you probably ain’t it (VERY expensive).

Funny thing is Stank’s ploy to get managers in their 50s to leave a few years ago has backfired on him…with most in that demo sticking around as long as they can now to keep coverage as close to 65 years of age as possible. A strategic fumble from old baldy. Who would’ve thunk it?

Non Union employees aren’t waiting around for a kicker. That’s non existent. Except for those hired prior to 2009 that still get an actual retirement package like Union employees, “IF” you make it to the 75 rule. And if you are not 65 years old and you retire. Att health care costs $1800 a month for a couple to keep the same coverage. Good luck non union employees.

Sev'd a year ago at my request after 27 years. Management. The only retiree benefit left worth anything is the AT&T Medicare Advantage Plan. Best advantage plan out there. After the medicare monthly premium of ~$200.00 you have a choice of $0.00 or $50.00 per month premium depending on if you want dental or vision. Most companies have that as well, the separator is the out of pocket is only $900.00 a year. So basically whatever happens from Dr visits to long stays in the hospital you only pay a max of $900.00 per year.

OP -- There are no benefits beyond what you mentioned. AT&T has taken away more benefits for retirees than they have added for active employees over the past 10 years. Don't let the retirement benefits keep you from leaving. I made that mistake and regret it now. Any retirement benefit that currently exists can be taken away at any time.

@ex also a shadow of what it was 34 years ago. We were treated as Professionals, adults even, for that first 25 years. That broke when when this excuse for Leadership thought they were going Hollywood. It's been a slow downward spiral since. Unfortunately the recent increase in the price of common stock leads them to believe treating employees like sh*t has increased profitability and will continue to do so in the future. AT&T is the model for mismanagement across the board. Shiny on the outside, rotting away on the inside.

I have lost all enthusiasm and pride in my work. Today's AT&T is a shadow of the company I joined 28 years ago. Offer a 6 month severance and I would leave in a hot minute. I would love to learn AT&T leadership is being investigated and subsequently prosecuted for their actions built on deceit and manipulation. My advice to the US government, and future employees and customers: Beware AT&T

@bw Wrong. They still prefer to not get sued so they do give severance to some terminated employees. It depends on the circumstances, and I could name people terminated that got severance packages the same as any layoff. See also: unemployment. You sound like someone that actually believes everything in the employee handbook is true. It is always a negotiation.

Severance is a benefit paid to employees that are laid off.

Termination is an automatic disqualification for the severance plan.

There are dozens if not hundreds of different benefit and retirement situations that exist at AT&T. It depends when you were hired, for what company, and the terms of subsequent acquisitions along with your bargained-for status. For a huge number of us, however, the only difference between retirement and resignation is the spelling. Some people who are fired still get severance, so actually getting fired is, in many cases, superior to "retirement." Therefore, just stop following the policies you disagree with and let the chips fall where they may. If you don't have a pension at risk, there is no more retirement.

@OP You left out a huge factor: Are you a bargained for employee or management employee?

If you have another opportunity outside the phone factory that meets or exceeds current salary/bonus pay and you are not retirement eligible, yet.

If you are management: Take the new job if it's going to result in better work/home life balance. You can switch your cell phone service to MVNOs costing $25/month. Most of the wireline managers in D9 I've spoken to no longer get retiree healthcare. The company no longer offered it to new retirees a few years ago. The more recent hires have garbage pension as well.

If you are bargained for: The pension jump can be substantial. Mine was $150K. I get retiree healthcare until age 65 (or until the company chooses to cancel it on subsequent contract negotiations). Internet and cell service is still discounted 50%. I plan on "retiring" this year well before medicare so the retiree healthcare is a big deal.

Everyone's situtation is different so understand the benefits to make the right decision.

This post makes no sense. Everyones situation is different. There is no blanket reason that everyone fits in to when they decide to leave.
I will leave after my 30 years. Some folks want to attain 35, 40 or more. Their reasons are their own and i don't question someone else's reasoning or life choices.
Most importantly, everyone shoukd be getting as much from the comoany as possible.

It's so easy to just work the very minimal without getting fired and take advantage of all the liberal ways to take off work paid, enjoying the easy ride until the inevitable termination package happens per our union labor contract. We're all going to eventually be laid off but it's just nice to know that when my surplus time does come along I get a generous parting gift thanks to my union. Of course it's only human nature to immediately slam what I'm saying if you're a bootlicker, which you likely are. I'm just lmfao and glad I didn't take some low level manager job.

If you’re that old you probably can milk the caregiver leave and vacations pretty well for the remainder.

You know when you switch companies that first year you get like no PTO usually and if you want to continue to contribute to a 401K then you will need to get vested at the new company if you want the company match.
