Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Anyone else here that planned on buying a house/car/big purchase but put it on hold due to the insecurity of working here?

🙋‍♂️. Saved for 4 years on a down payment trying to buy a house so I can start a family. Due to all the layoffs, that has been put on hold indefinitely for as long as I work here.

Can't wait to get out of here but the job market is absolutely trash.

Yes, I need to purchase a new vehicle but have put it off for over a year due to the uncertainty of this company. There is no promise of stability... work our behinds off and can't even enjoy finer things in life. My 2015 whip will just have to do.

@aq It's layoff adjacent, and brings up a good point. When a company is like this to its employees, it causes disruptions in their ability to make progress in their lives. You get less productivity because workers get demotivated, lose their drive. Why should you respect a company you can't afford a house under? When the problem could be easily rectified by not bringing on every Indian and their cousin to sit around doing nothing for years and years, and offering that money instead to the few remaining US talent that still exists.

Buying a house is a big no for me regardless of job stability because of interest rates, but honestly? I've been through a number of layoffs in my life. I've experienced long term unemployment. Near homelessness. Hunger. Bought a new car back in 2012, layoff hit me before the first payment was due. Sh-t su-ks when you have to take any old cr-ppy job to pay the rent, but no job is safe anymore, and the reality of layoff forever looms no matter where I go. I have always dug myself out of the hole and came back stronger. So no, I'm not being discouraged from big purchases.

Definitely do NOT buy a house right now. Rates are probably getting cut more. Twin Citied job market is a bloodbath so if you get laid off you will have to sell anyway.

When you rent and the furnace does not start or the water main springs a leak you aren’t financially devastated while also having unemployment and no other income.

Your gonna have to pay to live somewhere, might as well own a house. Plus, if you own a house you can get a mortgage forbearance up to 12months, rent they kick you out immediately

I’ve been working for more than 35 years. Regardless of where I’ve been, layoffs are always a possibility. I understand the concern about making such a large financial commitment but you have to live your life. Very few professions are layoff proof.

Don't you pay rent? Owning a home is about paying yourself and not a landlord...Don't be that one who is afraid of living so they stay scared in the corner.

No, I'm still going to keep spending until my credit cards are maxed. My car is reposed. My bank evicts me from my house. I'm living off of charity healthcare. And my kids are fed by the food bank of USA. Why should I change my spending habits? At least with me continuing to spend, I'm contributing to the economic data the Fed looks at to show the economy is resilient. And TACO can take credit for low inflation.
This is USA's America after all. The dollar is mighty as long as we can print. USA Debt is good for the world. It keeps the world economies moving.
