I just read an article that said many people are forgoing PTO due to fear of layoffs, and I realized I'm one of them. They really conditioned us like dogs, didn't they?

@es Yes!! I take days off that we are supposed to be in the office…it is a total waste of time…and depressing..no one wants to be there and then fight the traffic. Thank you Mr. Green Verizon.
@OP I was RIF'd last month and I always maintained a healthy balance just incase I was ever laid off. They wrote me a $17k check just to buyout my vacation. So thanks Verizon
Your PTO is lot more valuable to you to maintain your mental health than adding a few extra bucks to a final payout IF you get rif'ed. Take care of yourself.
@cf I'm in EMEA so have no idea what PTO or personal days are (We get a certain number of days leave entitlement and then paid sick leave for as long as we like).
What's the difference between PTO and personal days in the US as I thought they were interchangeable?
I thought PTO was the sum of sick leave and personal days?
@ap Not true. PTO is paid out. Personal days are not.
@ag Don’t forget to take your UIA days too!
I need vacations and time off to bring me happiness and sanity. So I still take them. My boss and his boss take them also.
PTO is only paid out in some states like CA. Rest of us needs to use PTO or lose it. Vacation is paid out even at separation. So use your PTO first. Then use enough vacation to continue to accural.
@a7 peopel use these terms interchangebely. PTO means paid time off and seems to lump in both vacation and personal days. Yes personal days are use them or lose them, vacation gets paid out. If you are not using all your personal days first then.... well you should be. Also you can only bank so many vacation days before you stop accunmulating so definitley keep an eye on that and make sure you at the very least use enough to not lose
I think there are some minor differences betweeen how you are "supposed" to use them but i have observed no real difference between how they are treated
sick days are another thing altogether
@a7 really? I thought vacation was paid out no matter what including if you voluntarily leave the company
You should use your PTO and save your vacation days. If you get RIF'ed PTO is not paid out. Its use it or lose it.
