Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

The worst state of mind is feeling cornered

Many of us are neck-deep in debt. We become almost irrational at the thought of losing our jobs, especially with all the bleak economic news and a saturated job market. I guess that’s exactly where they want us - living in fear, and therefore more willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to keep our jobs. Every time I have to work overtime, I promise myself I won’t let it happen again. And yet, that creeping fear always gets to me, and I do it anyway…I truly hate how this job makes me feel.

Your brain literally changes when you’re under constant stress/threat. People start to going into freeze mode and have trouble making simplest decisions to move forward. Stressing people out more by telling them to take a side hustle isn’t helpful. This is what Elevance has done to their workers by way of constant riffs and no transparency. They have the stupid pulse articles about how they care about our mental health and then can’t see that their behavior is contributing to the decline. Do what UHC did, start giving people the choice to voluntarily take a riff do the people who want to stay aren’t under constant threat day after day. It’s exhausting

Sorry OP, been there. Is there a side hustle you can take on a few hours a week that would take some of the pressure off?

@y4 You're right, and it's not just on big things. They'll throw you under the bus for a ham sandwich.

@a1 you are correct….no amount of extra effort on the employee part nor somehow meeting completely outrageous demands will keep you safe at this dumpster fire of a company. Just got RIF’d and was literally working 7 days a week to meet due dates which weren’t realistic with way too little staff. Think your director or staff vp will have your back? Think again…they will throw you under that bus Gail is driving through the company and onto the RIF list faster than you can blink all the while Gail gets her $20 million bonus and they claim your measly paycheck is the cause of their budget issues. Not sure how but they get away with destroying tens of thousands of lives every RIF and Gail and the board are just laughing all the way to the bank. Listen on any Town Hall…they literally tell the employees they could care less about them but tell them to work harder….for what? It definitely won’t save your job.

Job market is artificially saturated with cheap immigrant labor.

This is a scam. No politician will stand up to these donating corporations.

Hey y’all, I know you’re feelin’ lower than a snake’s belly with that debt pilin’ up and frettin’ ‘bout gettin’ canned from your job. Been there, heard that, and it ain’t easy. But listen up: your worth ain’t tied to your bank account or your job—you’re defined by the grit you show startin’ right now. Get fired up, not down in the dumps! Pour that worry into a plan. Grab a pencil, make a shoestring budget, slash every dang expense you don’t need, and chuck every spare dime at that smallest debt—snowball it, bless your heart! Scared of losin’ your job? Spruce up that resume, hustle for some side work, and network like a hound dog on a scent trail. You’ve got the gumption to turn this mess around, and I’m cheerin’ you on to take charge, one doggone step at a time!

I totally can relate. I am going to get a part-time waitressing job on the weekends just for a safety net for when I get rifd. I feel it coming. In the meantime looking for jobs like crazy.

The sad thing is - putting in the extra work doesn’t keep you safe from riff list. It su-ks! There is no reward for hard work here.
