Thread regarding Optum layoffs

How do RIFs typically work?

When do you get the meeting invite from your manager? How long does the meeting usually last?

I took today and tomorrow as PTO and my boss texted me at 9 this morning to say she needed to 'connect' urgently. I made her wait at least 15 min before I replied. Then the happy news was delivered that this senior citizen has been laid off from Optum.

What is the severance based on, as in based on the years of experience? 4 years service translates to how much?

On what basis will this RIF be? Is it performance based (2's, 3's) or people not following proper RTO protocol, based on pay or based on department budget?

Got it the day prior random 30 min schedule call mid morning. Thought cause they'd talked so much about new tasks and opportunity I was about to get loaded up with projects. Instead little bit of crying kinda knew it was odd when my manager said hi and went right to mute.

Took a few minutes of a script. Hopped off and I got removed from all our sync ups and team calls. Just chilled for the next two weeks and got my severance and a new gig not too long after with better pay and raises. Sometimes these things workout for the best. Given what all is going on and I still hear about.

Always 4 star reviews for me but good experience to realize how quick it can end

@ad I was a director and didn’t know about my reports. Notifications were handled by a Sr Dir and VP. I found out when my team all messaged me asking about the 15 mins invites.

I was the last one VP talked to after gutting my team.

@an We lost our empathetic, intelligent and hardworking Director back in 2022. Folks were devastated. That's how good of a human being this person was (and still is). The current managers and directors in our books of business pale in comparison.

When I was part of a RIF back in 2023, I was working and received a Teams call from our VP. He told me I was part of a RIF, last day, and he would provide references if needed. The reason why he called me was because our team, including my manager and director were part of the RIF. Tbh, I was completely blindsided because we had so many projects we were working on.

@ah you're better than me. If I get a notice, I will be logging out expeditiously. Peace Out.

I was RIFed in the March 19th round. I got a meeting invite 15 mins prior to the meeting. My direct supervisor found out 5 mins before I did. When I logged into the meeting, the Director and her boss where there, so I knew what was happening. I was given 2 weeks, last day 4/2. I was told that I wasn't expected to work in the last 2 weeks. I had direct reports and I did work and completed my obligations.

@ad they'll likely find out closer to the end of the day today to prepare for tomorrow's conversations if they're happening.

I received my meeting notice 30 minutes before my call with my manager (morning call). I'm not sure if he was notified that morning or the previous evening.

I’ve done them over the years and some this year. It’s not easy on either side of it.

Generally you keep it to 5 minutes tops. Managers can schedule it before they login which might drive some anxiety in their morning routine, but me trying to be less heartless waits till they login and then would shoot it over.

You really can’t answer anything as a manager, it’s a business decision and that is that. Tell them to log off for the day and we’ll circle back in a day or so in case there are items to transition.

When folks are doing them in a larger fashion, they generally get invited to a prep training with hundreds of others run by people team.

It’s hard, I’m not an emotional guy but the last one I wanted to reach to reach out and give them a hug as they were crying. Yet you can’t say or do anything, and certainly can’t console them. I did the last one as the bosses boss of the person vs having their manager do it, didn’t want to burden them with it.

Process is heartless, good luck to all if tomorrow is the day.

I don’t have any tomorrow thankfully, but that doesn’t mean my number won’t be up at some point. Anxiety all around.

On top of what others say you are told to log off and that your last two weeks will be basically garden leave. The only expectation is to return work laptop if you are remote, or leave the building in an orderly fashion immediately after if you are in-office.

When I was let go due a RIF last April, I received a meeting invite from my manager's boss a day before the meeting. The meeting occurred during the morning lasting 15 minutes. My manager had no idea that I was being laid off until the day of the meeting. The only attendees in the meeting were my manager's boss and me. During the meeting my manager's boss informed me of my employment at Optum, next steps and my last working day. If you do get a meeting invite, it is sent last minute (shortly before end of business day) and it is scheduled for the next day. The meeting is very short.
