Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

There are many reasons why we are usually nowhere near the cutting edge. I don't think anybody thought moving to the cloud would be cheaper (I think Saul even stated as much). Frankly, I don't think our goal was to move everything to the cloud-- rather we are going to end up in a hybrid cloud situation IMO. We are pretty slow on many things and in this case it might be a good thing. I can't read the article b/c of the paywall. But public cloud is anything from perfect- latency, cloud-to-cloud challenges, egress/ingress costs, being cloud native, etc. Add to that our seemingly inability to get out of our own way and actually get things working. Heck, even private cloud stuff hasn't been all that great either.

I never understood the appeal of cloud computing. It's like saying it's more economical to take a taxi into work every day than buy your own car and drive yourself.

The way WF does agile is piece of sh-t. the way agile is implemented is for people to do more manual work trying to make it look "agile". the guys at the top are d-mb as F trying to push thing to collect their bonuses.

You hit on an important point. And with some SaaS applications, we have no control over maintenance windows. And when multiple cloud apps are tied together, maintenance that takes down one, on a time we cannot control, can snowball into causing issues with the others at a very bad time.

The problem with Wells Fargo is we don't pay attention to the more recent experiences of others. We have people making decisions that do not keep up with the outside world.

The exact same thing is happening with Agile.

A lot of companies jumped into "cloud only" initiatives and are now dealing with problems the linked article refers to. My personal favorite (not in the article but causes a lot of issues just the same) is when managers decide to replace current software with some "best of breed" cloud based product that requires a good number of integrations with the current software (because their solution doesn't cover all the features needed to replace what is already in use). All they are doing is making these systems in general harder to support. And the more "cloud solutions" that are added, it becomes more difficult to keep data flowing from one to the other. So when something like SalesForce goes down, it will causes issue in 3 or 4 other systems.
