I've been doing this work for a very, very long time, and the best managers I ever had were the ones who listened more than they talked. They cared about their people and helped us succeed. These days, it's all talk and no substance. I don't even bother with all hands meetings anymore because there's never any real information or direction.

Real engineers have protected titles.
Real architects have protected titles.
More laws on fraudulently using these titles are coming
You are NOT professional engineers.
You are NOT architects.
You manage software. Period.
real leaders don't work for Cisco
Real leaders will schedule 12 months of work as 12 months of work, not 1-3 months which still won't meet release criteria after 3 years with a group which grows to many times the size of the original group.
Most ICs don't listen and place a higher value on their skills than the real street value. In other words you think you are worth more than you are and know more than you do. Most of you would be watching dummy lights on third shift at any other company. Ask any of those other geniuses and "great engineers" who have been unemployed for over a year now because a LOT of you will be there next slice.
Managers in some parts of Cisco do absolutely NOTHING apart from collecting RSUs!!!

@aj a lot of people in tech aren't listening. They are only being quiet waiting for their turn to speak. In their minds they are the only ones with something relevant to say.
@OP IMO the listening bit is true most of the the time if not 100% of it. it is pretty easy to spot when someone is not listening and if they are not, they do not care about the speaker or what that person has to offer but rather the next thing they are going to say.
Remind me, what's the difference between real engineers and cisco engineers?
The amount of bs trainings is too damn high!
