I am close to retirement, but constant cuts have made every day feel uncertain. I can’t believe that the final years of my career will be constant stress and anxiety about cuts. Getting through that will be harder than it should, but there ain’t much I can do about it.

You always apply somewhere else and find a job that values your skillset. You are only stuck if you have a skillset that cannot be used any where else
Get tagged out at the right time you will be happy about it. Severance, unemployment check, all unused vacation paid out, no awkward retirement "party", paying COBRA commander su-ks but later you can go on Obozocare or whatever flavor of it will prevail until 65. It's the best way to exit the workforce. Way better than just one day quitting.

Look at the bright side, how much you have achieved personally and financially. Now think about new graduates, starting life, mountain of debts inexperienced and unemployed!
