Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What happens in retirement?

Thoroughly enjoyed most of my 28 years. Walked in one day and couldn't see doing it anymore. Notified my manager and left for the last time 3 weeks later. Took SS at 62 and received the initial monthly checks from both of my pension funds. It took a month to fully sink In. I should have left a year earlier. People asked, why now? I didn't have an answer at that time. A month later I had an answer. My team lost 4 people in 3 years. What was left were the people who should have been surplussed. Yeah, probably me too. I think I would have been relieved. Sooner would have been better for me, that I am sure of. Yesterday another retiree asked if I missed the camaraderie. It was a joke. No, I will never miss the deadbeats. Never miss watching someone draw a paycheck they did not earn. Never miss those hired solely due to race, gender, or pronouns. Never miss the employee discount program that costs at least double that of AT&T competitors. Never again pretend to care about the work in a company that does not care about their employees or even their customers. After 3 months I finally wake up every morning feeling free. I never gave a thought to the costs of working at AT&T before I retired. After years of being obligated to do things that made no sense, you suddenly find yourself with the ability to reject such nonsense. I didn't know it at the time I submitted my notice, but what I want most was peace of mind.

Big mistake, do not, I repeat, do not retire unless you really want to.

I don't miss the stress. I retired in Dec. I should have left in 2023 but I felt that I needed to work until my FRA. My advice to everyone is: Retire before you get too stressed. Do not assume this job isn't hurting you unless you get sick. The silent ki-ler is stress.....

I’ve yet to meet a retired co worker who hasn’t said they wish they did it sooner. The only negative is the c r a p y English HR overseas that offers no help.
A lesson learned is the HR will make mistakes like craft is covered by the length of the contract for medical but the HR will place you on cobra and it will take many hours of calls over months and the union to have them correct. Another common complaint is all the employees concessions disappear.
As soon as my house is paid off I will join the less stressful part of this life before att threatens me I need to overcrowded city to than be surplus.

Have a good one. We’ve already forgotten who you were because you were a drag on the future. Now you’re a drag on our financials. Any chance you can accelerate being gone for good?

He (or she) should have also angled for the Surplus...Surplus money, unemployment money, pension money, 401k and HSA money...I was out in 2024 with 28 years. I don't laud or diss AT&T; I worked for the money and have no regrets. About to take SS at 62. Good luck. (Don't forget ROTH IRA too.)

So many people need to retire and just won’t do it. I say that out of love for them. Why are you still here? Most don’t have a credible answer. I get some are waiting on a kid to finish college or waiting on Medicare sometimes. Those are legit reason, but for everyone else, why? Take the pension money and go enjoy your life. We will miss you, but please live your life and don’t die still working here. Seen a few strokes at the office recently, scary stuff. Go be free and enjoy yourself. I will be out of here as soon as I possibly can. I don’t want to work for anyone else ever again, I hate that someone appointed above me has total control of my life, if I rise or fall or have a job or don’t. Go be free people. You aren’t saving lives here, it doesn’t mean a thing.

My wife and I both retired in the past 2 years. I agree with the notion of newfound freedoms. Once a month we have breakfast at a local before-work haunt. Fun staying seated when everyone else has to leave for the office. Naw, I think I'll just relax for awhile and have another coffee. (-;

Our AD retired last year. A really great guy to work with. His response to the Why question gave me chills, "I thought I was making a difference. None of it means anything in the bigger picture of Life".
