Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

How bad is Windstreams Network

Since a lot of folks who visit this site know first hand how bad is Windstreams network? Vulnerability, out dated equipment, or no educated responders to issues. I want to know what management is trying to sell us customers

Network is in bad shape right now. No spares, end of life equipment and alot of the skilled techs were either laid off or resigned. Repair and NOCs are being offshored, so its impossible to find someone who knows the equipment and even harder to find someone who speaks english. Windstream hasnt paid their vendors so the infrastructure is going without repairs, it will be a rough summer/hurricane season for windstream regarding outages. E.g. batteries in UPS(s) are not being replaced, hvac units in alarm, fuel filters and batteries not being replaced on generators. I have worked in telecom for 30yrs and this is by far the worst network I have ever worked on. How and why did windstream buy the company I work for?!?! Any customer that signs on with windstream will do so only to cut costs, and that would be an appropriate match as windstream cuts costs on their network at every turn. Imagine they put those millions in exec bonuses into the network or training? Things could turn around as soon as this company gets some proper leadership.....but it may be too late by then

ILEC is going full bore on GPON deployments. The transport and access parts are pretty good. WS has a lot of 100G waves in the packet network. On the down side it also has a lot of outdated junk still in service BUT now that it’s getting impossible to find spares for a lot of it even in the secondary markets, the upgrades will not be able to be pushed out much longer. Within a coupe of years WS or whatever it ends up being will have some pretty formidable network in a lot of the ILEC footprint.

In Lil T we believe. He got Big Tex and the no knowledge Colorado boys directing and managing from afar. Payments for executives bonuses and to the FCC are on equal footing. Networks in Guatemala are better with newer gear. Customers run if u can.

Unless you are in the ILEC footprint we are NOT a last mile provider for broadband.

There are lots of TDM networks from all of the CLEC's combined. All worth pennies on the dollar today. They are trying to get customers off of these networks onto the IP backbone but that takes time and money, 2 things we don't have.

Most of the parts have reached end of life. As one network gets de-comm'd we save the parts to
fix the other failing networks. It's all duct tape and bubble gum at this point.

Any support for the customers will go over seas to India.

We put in an end of life cisco 6513 recently. We use things that are laying around from other site decoms instead of buying new equipment.

Sarcasm aside. If you have or are interested in a modern product from Windstream it isn't actually too bad of a network. However, this is why it's so frustrating working here, it doesn't matter how good the network is when it's ran by clowns. They have ran off so much talent and created a riff between groups by a bloated management structure and the middle management can shine a wet t–d into a solid brick of gold by the time it gets up the chain. Don't blame the network blame the management.

Now is it all good? No it's a patch work network filled with the rottting corpses of various belly up clec networks. You can tell where priorities went on the m&a of these networks. For which they only did it to a price and no more. The solid parts of this network will, God willing, make the new owners and new management a solid purchase.

There really is alot of potential in this network. Will any of be realized by the current corporate structure? Hell no. They can f-c( up a wet dream.
