Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

What I wish someone told me

When I started out, I believed that working harder meant getting ahead, so I often stayed late, skipped lunch, came in on weekends, and even covered for people who weren't there because the company wouldn't hire enough staff. Do you know what I got in return? More work, and nothing else. No promotion, no bonus, just a growing pile of responsibilities until I eventually burned out and had to take leave.

That is why my advice to anyone early in their career is simple: don't do it. Do your job well, but do it at a reasonable pace and don't sacrifice your health trying to compensate for problems the company created. If they're understaffed, that is a choice they made, and they should be the ones dealing with the consequences. Don't protect them from their own bad decisions by wearing yourself down.

And the truth is, they are not going to fire you for working normal hours, because if they did, who would be left to do the work?

@af - it’s “there’s more”. Not “ Theirs more”. Hard to believe your d-mb*ss got promoted

@af - I agree on the thought that making more sprockets won't make an employee stand out. We can work 10-hour days 6 days a week but if we can't (I like to say "tap dance at performance time") prove how we've walked on water, it doesn't matter.

OP - totally get where you are coming from. I realized a while ago that I simply am not the employee who can create (automate?) processes which will take the place of the cr-ppy processes the company doesn't want to pay to replace. I am a cog...maybe you are a cog...I know most of us are little more than that to our CEO.

" If they're understaffed, that is a choice they made, and they should be the ones dealing with the consequences."

Well said. It's said everytime they blow up our personal phones with relentless texts and phone calls begging for overtime.

Never ever go above and beyond. What do you want? You and your coworkers all jumping up and down so the boss can promise a bonus or promotion. Then at the end of the year you get the “sorry, belt tightening. No bonuses this year.” If you pay me for X I do X. If you want Y then pay for it when I do it. I can’t tell my mortgage company let me live in the house all year and I promise at the end of the year I might pay back more than I owe you!

@af, What is efficiency? You have to s..ck up to the current management defining and enforcing the efficiency standard of the day. 10 years ago that was eight is great, then get this job to I&P, then get this job onto the Fargo chatbox, and soon get this job onto the AI agent. Its funny that the more this bank is trying to get more efficient their embedded ethics, their culture, will prevent it from succeeding.

Agree. Was with extended family over the weekend and we reminisced about our past vacations and trips, while also talking about a future plans. I was shocked how many times I was told "we couldn't travel at X time" because of something "important" happening at Wells Fargo. I had not realized how many times over the years I had let work impact time with family. Made me sad in retrospect, but defiant to make a change moving forward.

I did what you did and I've gotten 4 promotions or job changes in 15 years, making 4x from when I started. Theirs more than just hard work though. Need to network, be efficient, etc. You won't get promoted just because you made more sprockets. You get promoted when you make sprockets more efficiently.
