Thread regarding Optum layoffs

401k going down

Asked my manager as a follow op with the 401k going down and what other total compensation costs there are projected to be in 2026. She was surprised that barely any people were asking about that, granted the area I work in is basically all women of the older demographic. Do a lot of the people just not care with all these cut’s happening?

Everyone here who is complaining about not seeing the email where the 401K matching changed, here's a little advice. Read your emails. It takes 30 seconds to quickly review those ridiculous generic company emails to determine if it's of any interest to you. Stop complaining that you didn't see something that was sent to you - it sounds stupid.

@at Here are the details: The maximum 401K match is currently 4.5%, which a 401K participant can get if he/she contributes at least 6% of their salary. Beginning on 1/1/2026 the maximum match is reduced to 3.5%. For most of us, this will amount to a 1% pay cut.

The change was benignly announced via email as "An Update to the 401K Savings Plan," which is exactly the same subject that's used for trivial changes in the 401K investment options.

I am also one who missed the email about the 401k cuts. Can anyone here give specifics on the amount?

@af the our leader section was 69% which is the lowest I’ve seen.

My running theory as a director is India team members rank highly on surveys both because they get significantly better raises than US staff (7-10% annually) but because they have fear of retaliation for giving any critical feedback. There is no filter to see onshore vs offshore results at my level.

@ad No one said that they were offended - but, it was definitely a generalization that could be offensive to someone (s-xist and ageist). What the OP does or doesn't know about investing is neither here nor there, but such a gross generalization that 'women of an older generation' wouldn't care about a reduction in their 401K benefit is unnecessarily judgmental (and not even remotely a factually based assessment).

@ad I am an older female. I am not offended but rather my interest is peaked on how closed minded that comment was, likely from a generation who shoves ”acceptance” down everyone’s throat. Try to walk the walk.

@a7 you don’t have to be mean with your opinion.

I just reviewed employee experience results and they were the best ever. I don’t believe them one bit, people have stoped caring. Just like any relationship the day communication stops is the sign of it’s over.

@a8

Reduce your productivity to offset the reduced compensation

we all care...but there is nothing your manager can do about it and they also did not know before you did. Your manager is just as sc--wed over by this as you are.

Yup, I actively invest and I missed it in the generic email. Just deleted it with a bunch of other corporate spam I got throughout the day. I first learned about it on here and had a colleague forward his copy. It was just buried in there, obviously intended for people to miss.

A lot of people barely read their important emails. UHG knows this, that is why they used a super generic, ad-feeling tone.

So many people set their 401k and forget it for decades. That is what SH and friends are betting on.

Didn't ask because not sure we will get a meaningful or truthful answer.

No one noticed it because it looked like generic spam from faceless "Employee Benefits Center". The company was too cowardly to have a human being deliver the news

Trust me people care. A lot of people didn’t even see the cut because it was buried in a generic email.
