Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Those who think WFH is the way forward...

No, major companies are not shifting towards greater WFH options/number of days. Home Depot is the latest major employer to confirm this.

"...On Wednesday, the Atlanta-based company confirmed to media outlets that it would lay off 800 staff and make corporate employees return to the office for five days per week in the interests of “in-person engagement..."

I think if anything, RTO revealed a whole lot of weak and insecure managers who didn't know how to show value add in that model. They started ask themselves, why am I needed?

The CEO of this company has repeatedly gone on the financial networks, for literally years now, and made repeat public statements about his desire to force the attrition of thousands of workers. And you still get mouthbreathers on here insisting RTO is about productivity.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, this is a country that re-elected Donald Trump after all. Lead in the water or something.

@db "RTO has come back with a vengeance because people kept taking advantage of it and weren't doing their jobs"

What is your evidence for this statement? Most studies seem to show an increase in productivity with a WFH arrangement.

Large publicly traded corporations will continue to use periodic RTO as a means for stealth layoffs that don't shock the stock price, and as a side bonus fluff the value of the board's CRE holdings.

Smaller agile companies will continue to offer WFH as a means to poach talent for lower salaries.

Jackasses will continue to spout off on message boards believing the management messaging that decisions around WFH vs RTO have anything to do with performance.

When I started at Wells in the mid-2010s I was offered a full-time telecommute agreement after my first month. At the time that sh-t was rare as diamonds, the possibility of working from home wasn't even mentioned in the job description. These days I can go online and select "remote" from a fu--ing dropdown menu on job boards. Job market is a trash fire at the moment but remote work isn't going anywhere.

RTO has come back with a vengeance because people kept taking advantage of it and weren't doing their jobs. Companies are now returning to the status quo of the previous several decades because many people cant be trusted to work the hours they are supposed to work in an unsupervised environment. And yes RTO is a way to get rid of the slack as--s who got comfortable integrating every other aspect of their private lives into their working hours, which was never the intention of allowing them to WFH. Corporate America's entitled workforce had a few years to make it work and sc--wed the pooch. Hope you enjoyed it because it'll never happen again.

Laid off in 2o24. Took almost a full year of severance. Found a better paying job. So it can happen. I wish you all luck. I really do.

first of all double negation, second of all RTO is basically a layoff. They need to reduce headcount without paying severance and bad publicity - so they demand 5 days in the office. It is not about productivity - it is cost cutting. Economy is entering recession, therefore RTO is likely to continue.

That just means Home Depot is jumping on the "right size" train. All of these companies are incestuous at the board level and you are seeing group think ripple through corporate America.

The only reason to force everyone to RTO is because they know a percentage of people will end up leaving the company either voluntarily, or for cause when they don't comply.
