Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Badge reporting is so bad, they took the report down

Go look in Workday. They changed "Site Visits" to "Site Visit Maintenance" and it says "We are aware of issues with site level reporting and have temporarily taken the report down until those are resolved". This place is a circus.

@cr There is no NEW tracking lol. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens but as of so far, no. They are NOT tracking time in office.

Also, any org, manager, director+ who is ordering anyone to be in office for any set amount of time can f off because, until that's an OFFICIAL policy then you absolutely don't hacve to be in office for any amount of time.

@d5 That's the problem though. It's not the managers or even directors who gaf about if you go in or not; it's THEIR boss - VP's. VP's likely don't even care but guess who they ultimately report up to? Yup... JC

@cr everyone has the Tell Dell field in WD. that is where you find info if you are a manager. It is easier to assign the field to everyone and only populate if a manager who received feedback. Just like everyone has a certifications field or college degree field. Not everyone will have an entry in everything

this is the reason Dell is a sh#t show,so many people trying to disguise the fact that they dont want to work and in fact are useless to the company

Everyone that I work with coffee badges. It’s been happening since RTO was announced. No one from my team stays longer than 30 mins. Max 1hour. Even Directors and Managers do it. This place is such a joke. They give no f*ck about us so why should we care.

Frequent changes like this make it difficult to trust the accuracy of the data and raise concerns about transparency and consistency in how attendance is being tracked.

So with the new tracking, what's going to be the new policy? The level of micromanagement here is such a joke.

Not related, but when looking for this myself, I noticed in Additional Data, they have a section for Tell Dell results. Nothing in the table, but why is there at all? I thought Tell Dell was "anonymous"?

I rarely do work from my laptop so usually leave in car or at home. My Android phone is easier aside from my fat fingering.,That said… I usually attend 2-4 face to face b meetings and while others are heads down to their PCs, I am engaged.., message is you don’t need your laptop to be super productive. It’s a myth

I doubt any manager cares where you are as long as you get your work done... it's a useless stat to use in-office vs VPN hours.

@aq I mean... I get your point but like, your computer is connected to a non-Dell IP address at home, yet you badged in. So, it's super easy to figure out you are "coffee badging"

in office time is for in person collaboration, not to be online. This is specifically something the leader faq states, for the managers to ensure that while team members are in the office, they aren't just sitting and working on their computer. i often leave my system at home when I go to the office because of this. What are they going to do when they tell me I'm logged on at home all day but also badged in at the same time?

@am It's actually incredibly easy to track, unfortunately.

@ae It is that time of year where Dell loves to pull some huge policy change, so wouldn't surprise me... They can already track who's IN office and who isn't via IP, but because it was never an "official" policy, people have been coffee badging or going in for 10 mins, and leaving. A very simple Splunk query can pull up these records - I've done it myself.

It is ALL IP based.

For those who dont know what that means...

When you are in a dell office, you connect to their WiFi prior to connecting to VPN. When connecting to the WiFi, you are given a DELL internal IP address, not a public IP as it's NAT'd. Then when you connect to VPN you are given a second IP address.

When you are not in office, you are using a non-dell wifi connection (Spectrum, ATT, Grande, etc...) - which is a PUBLIC IP address. AKA not an internal DELL ip address.

Essentially, if your source IP is not an INTERNAL Dell IP address, then they know you are NOT in the office.

If you go in, connect for an hour then go home, they will see when you disconnect and then see a new PUBLIC IP address connecting to the VPN - your home WiFi - and know that you were in office for an hour, or xyz amount of time...

My personal suggestion is to go into office for at minimum 2-3 hours before going home as it wouldn't surprise me if we get a fun letter stating a minimum office hours memo in the very near future... And yes, we - as in VPN logs - can see how long you've been in office up to the last year, btw. Technically longer than that via Splunk but the firewalls/VPN's only go back to a year.

I'd quit coffee badging IMPO and at the very minimum connect to Wifi + VPN for at least an hour to be safe because as I said, they CAN look back - if they want to - to see who was "coffee badging."

Source - Cyber guy who manages the VPN's and knows who's connected and who isn't

I wonder how the tracking would work since even when I am in the office I am forced to connect to the vpn...

@ae Just leave your laptop in the office with a USB mouse juggler so it doesn't turn off. You'll show as connected 24x7.

Can confirm - hours online in-office vs offsite is now a metric - shift was caused by a review of tracking data.

They are updating the tool to track VPN vs onsite IP addresses, and hours online in the office or not. This is what my manager told me today.
