Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Being back in the office

HR shared with "people leaders" what the "hybrid work force model" is

  • Virtual=0 days per wk in an approved office
  • Hybrid 1=1-2 days per wk in an approved office
  • Hybrid 2=3-4 days per wk in an approved office
  • Onsite=5 days per wk in an approved office, clinic or storefront
  • Field=4-5 days per wk in-person with patients, members, providers

If you are 50 miles or more from an office, this is not suppose to apply to you
HR is deciding which one of those an organization (unclear as to what level they mean - staff vp level, director, mgr, etc.)
HR is supposed to sharing that around 7/27

Supposed to take effect 9/1

As to what an approved office is, my mgmt did not have clear definition of that. They made it seemed that not every rented/owned company location is available to every employee.

If you look at your profile in Pulse/Workday, they (HR?) have been changing work locations. At least for people that were working here before the shutdown. Mine was working remotely (or some such phrasing) now it has an office location.

Another rumor is ATL free food ceases 8/1. No word on free food ceasing at other locations.

This video explains why Elevance Health (and most other large corps) are telling employees to get back into an office:

@adqh+1nBEZzqL They waited until enough other companies forced their employees back into the office to make the decision for us to go back in. That would limit our options for other remote jobs and be able to leave Anthem/EH. Just because you were hired remote full time doesn't mean you won't have to report into an office now unless you can prove you are over 50 miles or an hour's drive from the nearest assigned office. Just like with any other supposed benefit at this company, they give your immediate resource manager the option to withhold it from you including expense and education reimbursement and working remote full time. Best of luck to all during these transitions.

If you were home pre-pandemic, you should be able to stay home now.
"They" wasted the covid savings on rebranding. "They" gave Gail an $18 million pay increase in less than 5 years. "They" pay our executive leadership too much. NOT ME. Quick picking on the middle class. Damn. I see the executive exceptions to this rule & I'm so grossed out. Gloria's still virtual.

10 hospitalizations per week from covid in Indianapolis still. Our homelessness and crime are out of control. You're doing this 3 months before prime flu season. WHY???

Well, if you are in a large chunk of IT, you no longer have to worry about this because you'll be IBM employees effective 9/1. And if you've been notified, you'll have no choice. There is no option for you to say no. You can quit and walk away with nothing or you can go to IBM and be up to their whims. You can't even pot for a new job to try and stay at Anthem.

Only good thing out of all of this is that the call center reps are exempt. Those poor people are abused enough!

For those not near a pulse point, does that mean a foreboding future here?

Didn’t they just make Fortune’s top 50 of best places to work? Guess that’ll go away once everyone starts giving bad reviews?

Assignments for categories are out.
In the web browser, get to your profile in WD
Click on Job
(you may want to note your location)
towards the top, click on Hybrid Categories to see what you are assigned

Cannot say it is out for everyone

Which genius thought of this? Hey lets tack on 2 hour commutes, add train/parking money, child care, taking 1/2 days off instead of an hour for medical appointments. Im guessing f’ing gloria pushed this. But who took her place? Im telling them straight out no im not going in. Pay me more to balance my useless spend. Whomever thought of this is a narcissistic, out of touch, control freak, awful leader. They can enjoy my middle finger shoved up their kabootle.

We haven't been told anything yet, but I saw it coming. Offices being refurbished, adding new meeting hubs, etc. Whenever I go in ,there are very few people. People abused that free food so I'm not surprised about that. Will wait and see..

This is likely an easier way to getting rid of employees without doing layoffs. I assume there will be lots of manager discretion involved. Likely won't be "mandatory" but something they can score off your eval. They also need full time IT staff. I assume that will be a huge issue. There will be so much logistical headaches that by the time stuff gets in order Covid wave will happen again . Some managers love control and will strictly enforce it...others will just want you to check a box. As much as I dislike the policy, the real issue is that this policy won't be applied evenly across the board. Some managers will find loopholes and exceptions for their teams. I dare anthem to apply this to almost everyone and then they will see what real attrition looks like.

This is so confusing. Why can't leadership at this company work with HR to fully bake a plan before they roll it out. You have people marked in Workday with tiny office locations housing business units that have nothing to do with what the remote workers are supporting and have no office space to house more people. Many of these work from home employees with this small office designation are over 50 miles from full-size offices that have room to house more employees reporting into office on 9/1. Why cause the confusion of assigning a small office location in Workday that leadership already knows won't be used by that employee and put the correct designation of Remote - residing over 50 miles from nearest full size regional company office?

If you were around in 2018 / 2019, you remember the pulse point push. If you weren’t in a PP and in the office full time, you couldn’t newly manage people, weren’t eligible for promotions, and an assortment of other limitations. The response was so poor they backed off.

This is just a wash/rinse/repeat.

Thank you for this heads up! Can you explain the business justification behind this? I thought the comapny was meeting goals and making $$ over the past few years....
What will the long term or end game look like for people who are not within that 50 mile radius to an office? Seems like they would become VERY limited to what roles they could move up into (if ANY)? And those who are maybe near less large office locations....there are very few high level positions (if ANY) - will they be stuck or unable to progress their career? Unless they move?
And jobs that were remote BEFORE COVID are no longer viewed as remote or have been changed? Seems so odd that someone could be a remote worker for 10 or more years (prior to COVID) and then all of a sudden that is no longer viable. They completely changed existing job descriptions & statuses...right?
