Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Can they keep anyone talented?

More and more great people are leaving. Whoever has any marketable skill is already gone. It never ceases to amaze me that they are completely indifferent to it, as if they actually want to get rid of the best ones. Totally insane. Can they do anything to prevent the departure of the remaining talented people?

Where would you get real information from then ?

Anyone can post anything to this site, and without a link to an external data source it is, at best, a rumour. Not the best place to get real information from.

How do you know I have no access to that data? Maybe I’m Cleveland...and I’m as p-ss-d as you are for not milking the $80 stock price.

There is a lot of dead weight ...
The more talented individuals will have a higher grade level and higher salary.
So when seagate does a riff it’s based on grade
Level And salary.
I witnessed many many riffs at seagate and very talented individuals were riffed ...
If you want to milk your career at seagate I would recommend that you don’t over achieve.

Second poster here. 3% is true. It's very low in Asia and engineering. Pros and cons to numbers that low.

@acdi You have no access to that sort of data. For the sake of argument, let's say it's true. Why are they "dead weight" when they obviously survived many layoff cycles?

@acdi So what's stopping you?

Seagate attrition is an unhealthy 3%, thriving companies have attrition between 8 % - 12%

Indicates dead weight. Need more people to leave.

Seagate executives like to blow smoke about drives of the future. They actually have discrete recording on the PR roadmap but I doubt they spend a nickel on the technology. The best engineers are no fools and smell the BS a mile away. It's all about keeping investors interested, nothing more.

They have no clue who does what and why it’s important to the business. They have zero respect for the amount of dedication to learn the technology and be a go to problem solver. People are leaving because they basically get no respect or rewards for their efforts from the top. Your team effort can make or save Seagate a million dollars a year and you don’t get squat except complaints about the next problem thrown in your lap. Yeah It’s no surprise people with skills go.

The engineers are now codependents to a company that is addicted to their dividend. If you hang around, it's your fault.

The chances of seagate paying people more are minuscule. They think that armies of engineers are queuing up to work for them.

The talented would stay if they thought Seagate had a long-term future worth staying for. Otherwise they need to find opportunities that will give them and their families a sense of security. Paying more, is at best, a short-term fix that does nothing to remedy the real problem.

If they do the right things to keep talents, the only way is to get rid of more incompetent people and pay up to those with talents, which translate into a lot more layoffs. Is that what you want to see?

The matter of fact is that in today's market, if you have real marketable talent, you can make 2 to 4x somewhere else as an engineer.

Otherwise, what would you suggest?

What is the common denominator of losing great, marketable talent? Answer: they are more of an overhead cost burden. When you can't grow a business the only alternative is cost reduction - but eventually that will fail dramatically. It's obvious to anyone without a denial complex that this company is not viable long-term.
