Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

A brief message for those getting laid off

First, I understand your feelings. I got let go from a different company several years ago and it never feels good. Even though it's usually not personal it always FEELS personal. Especially when you think about all your contributions over the years. Feelings like, "How could they let ME go after everything I've done, all the long work days, all the good performance evals and kudos, etc.!" Being upset is a normal reaction and no one should attempt to invalidate such feelings.

With all that being true, it's also important to not lose sight of the big picture. What's that big picture? All of us are on this planet for - in the span of human existence - no more than a micro-second. And unless you're very famous when you depart this planet, within just three generations almost no one is likely to remember you ever existed. The point? In the grand scheme of things...none of it really matters.

This short, <5 minute video sums it up nicely:

"A Reason To Stop Worrying: Watch This Whenever You're Stressed or Anxious"

@af I had the opportunity to save several lives years back. After that moment, I always felt like I had managed to make an impact that would ripple past me, even though nobody else would likely know it was me. Generations descending from those kids and their kids into the future that wouldn't have existed if not for me being in the right place at the right time.

I believe your impact is within the few generations...your kids, and grandkids. Beyond that maybe not, but you can keep the stories alive from priors.....my grandpa was a gold prospector in the early 1900's, I keep those stories. His dad....a "hanging" judge in the wild west.

Thats how you will not be forgotten. Do interesting things with your life that gets the stories passed down.

@ab just because your name is forgotten doesn't mean you don't have an impact.

"within just three generations almost no one is likely to remember you ever existed."

I immediately thought "That can't be true." Then I thought about my own family and yup, it's true. Beyond my grandparents I don't even know the names of older relatives. Much less anything about their lives. Even though the stories of all those older relatives are also the story of why I'm here. Kind of sad when you think about it.

Thanks for the perspective OP.

Agree 100%.
The last time I was let go, I just packed it all up and left, found a new job a few months later. Prior layoffs were as described....felt bad, displaced, sad...

Now its much easier to accept a layoff when you have no debt, money available (savings, 401K, etc). I do not anticipate losing my present job, but I do wake up knowing that this could be the last day as well. I am mentally, emotionally and physically prepared.
