Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It’s funny when you realize how pointless RTO actually is

I forgot my laptop at home and didn’t realize it until I got to the office. It’s kind of hilarious how there’s literally no work to do without it. No systems. No tools. Nothing.

Which exposes the flaw in the whole RTO and “collaboration” argument. If presence alone created value, being here would still matter without a laptop. But it doesn’t. All the actual work still happens digitally, exactly the same way it does at home.

If the office adds no functional capability beyond what a laptop provides, then forcing people to commute just to open the same apps on a different desk defeats the entire purpose.

RTO is disguised layoffs. Ya'll think these incompetent c-suites don't know that people resent rto.

RTO would make sense if they have all teams under a director or an app in the same place. In this day and age that's impossible and borderline stupidity.

What we get is id--ts shouting non stop in calls, clogged toilets and dirty microwaves. I wasted 20 minutes yesterday to find a toilet to take a dump and everything was taken or clogged.. so after the dump.. I had wasted 30 minutes in all.. which could have been 30 minutes of productive work at home..

Silly. They want you to quit. AT&T is purposely creating this toxic environment so you quit. They dont want competitive people in the US. Hybrid jobs are offered overseas e.g. Bratislava, Brno etc because they need the talent there. No matter how much they spin this, that's the goal.

Offers no value. I sit in a office with people I have no work related items to discuss and I sit in a area by myself. I have been keeping track. I haven't spoken to another employee in person since Dec 16th. Not even a 'good morning'. I do talk to the contract cleaning crews so there's that.

@ag anyone that could have left already did. No job hopping or hoping like 5 years ago. Job market is limited to few WFH gigs and many take a pay cut. Plus most new opportunities are now being based in Lahore, Manila, and even Montenegro

The best employees in the world are allowed to work where they want, when they want, how they want, but we don’t offer it to our own people.

I believe if you hire great people who are talented and have great character then they will know what’s best for them, how and where to work. So if you give them that opportunity they will actually deliver more than you could ever ask for.

When you mandate 5 day RTO the top talent leaves and you’re stuck left with the bottom quartile of talent who won’t deliver anything of value no matter where they sit.

Downright hilarious… goofball. Don’t forget your badge, laptop, wallet, and lunch box or lunch money.

@ab real studies show the exact opposite of what you state. I worked from home for 14 years before Covid and it was never a problem then, why is it now?

Studies have proved that WFH is less productive than in the office. Too many distractions and no supervision. People are losing social skills and don't remember how to interact effectively when staring at a screen and playing with toddlers and dogs all day between Teams meetings. We hear them in the background when you have to unmute. I think that was the catalyst for management to bring everyone back. It was cute when we were all locked up for COVID-19 but the cuteness wore off after 4 years of barking by different dogs still barking during meetings.

I recently had the same experience. Not to mention, when traveling for the company I can do everything I do in my office from hotels, airports, on trains, using only my laptop and COU.

The entire RTO script is BS. For the record, I was born in the late 60's, I'm not a kid.

@a5

You have all the tools to be a critical thinker, and this is how you use them?

What a shame.

@a5 sounds like you’ve done it for over 100 years too, boomer. Your logic and this in-office model is out dated. What will they do when you and all the other dinosaurs who make up 80% of this company retire in the next 5 years? Hybrid is the standard. Good luck finding top talent.

@a5 you won’t see me at any water cooler. I can work 9-5 from home just like I did for 14 years before Covid. No need to be in the office to complete my duties.

Kindly work 9-5 M-F as prescribed. Been done for over a 100 years where we accept a position after factoring in commute time and child care programmes. Covid is over. See you at the water cooler.

Even when I do have my laptop in the office I still get half as much work done as I could from home. 3 hours commuting instead of working, The senior social hour distractions, and third world call center vibes talking over the person next to me is not a productive work environment. Maybe this works for some but not for all. It has to change.
