Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

What does all the worrying solve?

For those asking when layoffs will start, or who is next etc. What exactly are you going to do with this information? Look for another job? You should be doing that already. Even if the info was available to tell you your department, or specifically you were being laid off, what would you do with this information? Save your money? You should be doing that already. Someone help me understand what all this worry is worth. Explain to me how knowing what will happen will change anything. BTW, you'll never know. You might get some tips about a certain department but you'll never know if it's going to be you. Why worry about something you have no control over? What you can control is how you prepare and you should be doing that already. Worrying about what can happen will only make you sick. Be in the moment. If it happens be as prepared as you can. But stop worrying about it.

Its surprising how few people keep their resume current and get evaluated by a professional resume writer once ever 1-2 years

@OP This is a page to discuss lay offs - so any tidbits people share are helpful. We all know what we should be doing and I for one have been doing all of those things (thankfuflly!) I was layed off in January and I WAS NOT expecting it. Was I surprised? Yes. Was I shocked? No. And it has been the biggest blessing in disguise. Life changing for the better. Citi is not the end all, be all. Try to remember and believe everything happens for a reason.

FYI/BTW/TIP for all:
I was in HR, we did not know more than anyone else EXCEPT this: Layoffs always happen verbally on WEDNESDAY and your last day with access will be the very next FRIDAY (2 days later). Clean up your computer, screenshot you reviews and 360's, make a list of people you want to keep in touch with or use for future references. A co-worker of mine had been at Citi for 15 years in HR and had their resume and lots of stuff in a file there. Was updating it Friday and lost access in the mid afternoon. PLAN AHEAD and GOOD LUCK!!

Handed in my two weeks notice today. It took me virtually 10 months in 2025 to find something, but I kept at it. I saw the writing on the wall after the 2023 reorg brought in a toxic MD and his bootlickers. I'm headed elsewhere soon...finally. I'll take my talent and skillset somewhere else where I will be judged on my output, work products, drive and will to succeed and relationship building skills...Citi can keep rewarding singularly talentless products of nepotism and boot licking

@ag your attitude is not going to land you a role at Citi or anywhere else. I can guarantee it.

@ab what makes you think I have that so called network or that all of us play those little games, some of us are surviving and surviving means no time for fake people. I have the skills and I will probably be alright, but if I can stay in Citi, I want to stay. Things are not always greener from the many companies I've been with.

Because little people worry. That's all they can do. Most people do not realize how little they are until the call. For few this reminds their first call in another company. They become a bit more little so worry little less. Knowing ahead helps. Good?

@a9 honestly, you need to assume the worst. Start reaching out to your network, even if it is to say hi. get an email distribution list together (it takes time). schedule some coffee dates/lunches with decision makers outside the company. look at ideal job descriptions and update your resume and Linkedin to mirror them. If you don't have extra cash- figure out some sort of consolidation. Do you live alone? can you get a roommate. Do you own/rent? do not waste your time trying to stay at Citi. everyone is paralyzed.

Because we want to decide whether we should be worried or not, knowing helps, otherwise being in a state of preparedness is not livable. I need things, I can't be saving everything and being like this year by year, if on the other hand I realize it most likely won't hit as it hasn't happened in 2 years, then I might spend in things I need. Not everybody has cash to just stash away. However if I realize it's imminent yeah, I might save the whole damn check for the next weeks and eat noodles.
