Today Marked Six Months Since I Was Laid Off (FE-HSE)

Today marked six months since I was laid off.

I realized it in a strange way. I got in my car to grab coffee and, out of pure habit, drove straight to work. I was already pulling into the parking garage when it hit me: oh sht, I don’t work here anymore. I turned around and drove home.

When my wife asked where I’d been, I told her I was just driving and thinking. And I was. I thought about the people who were laid off before me, some of them were ten times the employee I ever was. They didn’t lose their jobs because of performance; they lost them because of bravado, politics, being labeled “too much,” or because the wrong VP didn’t like them. Most of them have landed great roles at other Fortune 100 companies.

My wife suggested I reach out to them, to call or email and ask for help. I told her I’d be surprised if any of them even responded. The truth is, several of them had reached out to me when they were let go, and I stayed silent. I didn’t want them back then. They felt like competition.

A lot of the people who stayed weren’t chosen for the quality of their work, but for who they knew, and honestly, being female or non-white didn’t hurt either. I’ve reached out to friends still at Chevron. No response. I’ve reached out to people who were laid off before me. No response.

I call them friends, but maybe we never were. Maybe we were just people using each other until there was no value left, and then we were discarded.

Right now, I feel like I’m walking alone, and it feels terrible. I made a lot of money as a 26+, but it’s lonely at the top (if you call 26+ the top), and it hurts to know people are calling you an a--hole behind your back. I tell myself “fu-k them,” but it still hurts.

It really hurts. I keep wishing I had been a genuine friend instead of just a company friend. I wish I had lived out the faith I claimed, instead of being a “corporate Christian,” saying the right things for appearances. Lately, everything hurts. I’ve done a lot of soul-searching, but I still feel empty.

Chevron is no different with DEI than all the other top 5 oil and gas companies that I am intimately familiar with - they gravitate to 3 departments. Many I have had interaction with are barely functional; not performers, not drivers.

  • Chevron is different, work friends rarely turn into outside work friends. Looking back, other companies that I have been at, more outside work friends are created.
  • Chevron is people tend arrogant, that is big difference from EOM.
  • Chevron long term survival is not a sure thing. Chevron strategy is build cash for acquisitions.
  • My predictions are more layoffs 20% more in 2026, 2027, 2028. Right sizing going to happen. CVX will abandon Northern California before 2030.

That's what it means working for DEI to big companies. You were never part of the company officially your payroll came from DEI therefore you where hired exactly DEI wanted you: Delusional expandable internship. used by your childish ideology guess what so will next generation after you will eventually increase thanks to your ideology congratulations now you figured out your the key of destroying the future not uniting anything let alone in America. now you know cruelty in why jobs like this were not meant for you cause all illegal activities you all have caused. With the need graduated college studies that being taught through socialism will not have the opportunity thanks to you. the next generation will never really mount to anything with false education that's DEI has caused for every universities in America, and out. Congrats for being the key destroying the future. Have fun with so called learning your mistake as if your capable of doing so now or later because you won't.

The new attrition mantra is forced rankings where the lowest 5% of staff in each pay grade will be offered a PIP or be offered a 3 month severance package to resign voluntarily. The days of the scheduled AEOI every 5 years is over. The time it takes to implement a reorg, the stress on the employee morale and overall buyout offers are too expensive and time consuming to continue. The US based employees are being replaced with people from low cost geographies, while we train our replacements over the next several years. The days of planning the next AEOI into your retirement are over unfortunately. Very disappointing!!!

@OP leave CVX behind for good. It was great while we’re at the company but it’s just one chapter. I’ve also started driving to a former company on autopilot. It doesn’t mean anything beyond it was reflex. We have an opportunity to use the freedom we have to find what makes us happy in a new chapter with new people and new opportunities. Look forward and don’t turn back.

It is important to know who you work for - and it isn’t CVX. You work for your family, your retirement, and yourself - CVX is simply a means to that end. If a different company better helps achieve that outcome then move, no need for loyalty to CVX as it will never be reciprocated.

I started a new job and I'm meeting new people, which is helpful. However, I am still healing from last year’s events. I’ve realized that personal resilience is the best tool for moving forward.

Chevron is a shell of who they used to be. There are/were good people at Chevron but the culture is getting worse every year. Consider yourself lucky to be spared from the next round of layoffs which will be much worse. Work friends are not real friends. Most at Chevron are workaholics who barely have enough time for family. Since you are PSG 26+ you may be one of the lucky ones who can retire and enjoy life after Chevron. Go out and have some fun and find hobbies and friends who enjoy life. You earned it.

You’re starting to get it but have a long way to go. You talk about the regret of not being a genuine friend. Of ignoring people. But you STILL accuse people of special treatment because they are female or people of color. It could never occur to you that that ugliness may have been visible at work and that’s why they were picked over you. Not because of their identity. Maybe they had more humility. Maybe they worked harder because they were never given the benefit of the doubt that mediocre white men enjoy.

@as The largest shareholders are institutional investors, in order are: Vanguard (9%), State Street (7.6%), BlackRock (6.9%), and Berkshire Hathaway (6%). These are mostly held in mutual funds that are broadly owned by everyday investors and retirees. Less than half a percent are held by executives and other insiders.

@ab, "All Chevron people" as you posted includes You. Thanks for at least owning up to the problem that you are party to.
BTW - the same is true for most companies, large and small. You shouldn't be looking for any employment opportunity as a way to "find friends" to begin with.

the corporate culture has turned very rotten over the last few decades
i think because of the focus on 'shareholders'
which are mostly 10% of the population
which don't actually produce the product
they are 'tourists' at the companies
they just look for quick bumps in the share price
the community feeling is gone

The only true friends, a much misunderstood word, I made during my working life had no connections to this sad company.
