Development plan -- same as quiet layoff?

Hi, my manager gave me a written development plan. I am unfamiliar with the process here - can someone please share if these plans are genuine and have good success rate for me to give it my all? Or should I work on finding a new job? Any recommendations will greatly help me, I'm in a state of shock since yesterday

A development plan is a predecessor to a PIP.

You have time on your side but you should definitely be looking around. Have a frank discussion with your manager about where you might better fit.

@mr A PIP is a either or situation: You meet the goals of that plan, or you are fired. Any severance is up to your management, but PIPs are "cause"

So a PIP is pretty much a death sentence?

If you don’t meet the “goals” at the end of the year, would they fire you or provide a layoff?

If it’s a layoff then I would assume you would get a package on the way out?

A development plan is not a PIP. Sounds like they're (again) going to be more formal in assigning goals and evaluating you against them. When you don't meet the goals they set, they they can use your lack of ability to meet the DP to start a PIP. Or have paper backup to fire you for not doing your job.

Look for a new job.

If they don't trust in your ability to do the work without micromanaging you, that means they have no respect for you/your work.

Add to that the fact that they are now creating a paper trail to "prove" whether you're measuring up or not (to "goals" which you will see keep changing, are ambiguous, purposely setting you up to fail), and you should be able to read the writing on the wall.

It's time to find a different job.
Get on it now, so you can find something better before being stressed out with this phony "development plan" and/or a lay-off or firing due to bogus "under-performance".

Does any of it even matter? High performing managers replaced by lower performers last round. Everyone being told their topped out. Going into the second quarter of the year and my manager has yet to assign me goals.

Not a Personal Improvement Plan (PIP) which usually turns into a layoff.

@a8 thank you soo much for responding. You’ve no clue of how helpful this is.

Should I then focus on mostly looking for a new job than try to clear the development plan is the main question I have.

It’s now an annual thing. Mostly bullsh-t, but they like to check the box that they are giving you opportunity to advance.

@a2 understand that. Are development plans the norm here? Any scope of getting out of it?

If they gave dates on when issues need to be fixed by then it's time for a new job. As someone who's jobless and has been for the last 7 months, try to hold on for dear life and look outside TMO.
