Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Question 🙋

Is the layoff applicable to full time only or contractors are going to be impacted as well? Can organizations sacrifice contractors to meet the 15~20% target and reduce Opex pressure? My organization is loaded with contractors with only a handful of full time employees.

@ad T&Ms are mandated to take Independence day week, Thanksgiving week and Christmas week off.

@ab if you are a T&M contractor, you can technically be cut anytime. All depends on the budget and where they need to save. But you are not included in the RIF number. SOWs are handled differently.

every director are given a number to reduce 20% in each team and for contractors they are targeting to get the cheaper price or almost free . They taking the advantage of the situation .

On my team we're releasing 75% of our contractors. Take that for what it is; from just one team in one org.

@aa what do you mean by not renewed, I’m on a 2 yr contract. Are you saying they just won’t renew after that 2 yrs or they just release you now?

Contractors are generally not cut, they are just not renewed. Part of their allure is that they provide the "flexible" workforce that companies say they want without having to pay any of the benefits. We all know how that works in practice.

FTEs should get cut first due to cost. Most of the contractors are better talent than FTEs but are taken advantage of.

@a7 True. Although some contractors make a higher hourly rate, the company doesn’t have to pay contractors severance, VSP, RIF packages….

FTEs will be first to go, as they require more expensive overhead (benefits, bonuses, etc).
