Remember that the team you play for is Team You, not Team ${COMPANY_NAME}. As soon as the interests of Team You and Team ${COMPANY_NAME} don't coincide, there's a reason to go separate ways. The company might initiate the separation, or you might, it all depends on who has motive, initiative, and another path to follow.

@OP All true, but add in HR is there to protect the business and not you.

Build enough of a financial buffer so that a layoff isn't an immediate catastrophe.

Invest in yourself because at any time your employer can ask you to leave with very little notice
