Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Is severance in Canada similar to what we see here?

I know Europe operates very differently, but I’m not sure where Canada falls.

@a9 No not a lawyer... still at Oracle for now at least. I got 4x what was offered as they went down the ESA route being an American company and not knowing better. You'll need to pay a consulting fee when you first meet the lawyer on the phone where he/she will advise you on the process, how they can help and what you should expect. Do your homework but don't sign anything until you know. I believe you have 2 years to make a decision but you'll need to check that.

@a2 you sound like a lawyer selling services. How much severance would have gotten vs how you got going through a lawyer? We can subtract the $2500. I doubt you got much more than the original severance but went through a whole lot of time and trouble to get it.

Don't accept the package until you talk to a employment lawyer. BTW don't fall for the 'we only take 20% of the additional payout they get'.scam...... I've been hit a few times over the years. I've always taken the 'Pay by the email/engagement' approach. Last time it only cost me around $2500 CAD all in. Just make sure the lawyer will charge part hours for emails, calls and reviews etc or it will start adding up. Worse case if it does end up in court you can always change to the %% of gains approach. Any good lawyer will offer that.

Also, you don't need a Toronto lawyer... they are expensive. I use one in Ottawa who is much less but just as good.
