At this point I find myself surprisingly hoping to be on this je list, and wonder how many others have gotten here? I wasn’t feeling this way and know it’s a bad market apparently but some severance and time to pull myself out of the anxiety I now live in daily and sounds actually like the better option. Worried about further decline after more loss if I am still here, certainly not going to get better any time soon and will just mean more work for the rest of us, at the end of the day I don’t get an email I think I’ll have more envy than survivors guilt. Sad it’s gotten here used to love my job my company.

I entered the workforce in this industry after the Great Recession and I always expect layoffs. I saw my father get laid off (manager role in the manufacturing industry) in the 80s and the aughts. My entire adulthood has been an exercise in sniffing out and preparing for layoffs as much as I can. I feel bad for older generations who stayed around in one company because it was a different era when you all entered the workforce, and it is hard work looking for work.
@bm So sorry you were blindsided by this. I know this can be upsetting for you. Take some time to figure out your next move. Take advantage of the placement services offered. With 27 years you will have a good severance. This was not your fault.
Omg.. I spent 27 years with the company! Work from home for 17 of those years! I’m devastated! In total shock! Got a cold script call! And here you are wishing you would get the call!
@af ditto
Was impacted this morning. Not as upset as expected.
I think the envy of those laid off comes from the past few years of doing the job of two people. People left the company and the hiring freeze stopped them from replacing those positions. Now they are letting more people go so those left will be around to pick up even more pieces. Those left feel doomed since the result of their hard work is knowing more layoffs are coming. It's a lose, lose situation. A lot of great people were let go because Cigna always hired the best of the best. It's extremely sad to know you're just a number.
@a9 you are probably among the useless workers remaining.
The post is right.
The people who are envious are envious because they are disgusted seeing good people let go while being stuck with incompetent people. The number of good employees I’ve seen let go while their nepo peers continue to bleed money and break projects remain. Survivors see their career is already floundering when they know what they are left with. They envy the severance package because they know that if things don’t improve, and probably won’t, they’ll be looking for a new job or let go outside of the severance packages layoffs.
@aa sorry to hear. praying for everyone involved.
I was let go today - been with the company for ~4 years after being a contractor.
I'm not surprised - sounds like there were quite a few roles eliminated. It also seems there will be some severance though, awaiting the email with more details.
Imagine just getting the news that your 10+ year career with the company is over and being devistated and stumbling on this where someone is hoping to get laid off. Wild to post on here, and most likely just cope.
At this point… I am wishing that too, with a severance package of course
I've been laid off, and it's devastating. I don't understand the envy at all.
Me!!!
know MULTIPLE people who are hoping to be on the list. im newer to my field than them so id like to get a year/two more experience to build my res i guess. otherwise id prob feel the same as them.
