Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Anybody feel the same?

IC here. Been a while… I check this site every month or so and haven’t seen it this active since the Friday before Oct 2023 layoffs. What a time.. lol

Anyways, I guess I always knew deep down that RTO4 (eventually 5) would come to pass. I don’t agree with it, I think it’s stupid af, but I guess I’ve just become numb to giving a sh-t. Another day a week in office means more money and time spent on gas, commute, daycare etc. for no reason other than to sit on virtual teams meetings and have distracting conversations in the rows. It adds literally nothing of value to the business or productivity side of things and is nothing more than a display of the control execs have on our lives. The 3 day system was working, nothing was wrong with it, and for those that haven’t abided by those rules… 4 days isn’t going to fix that problem.

All that being said, I just don’t have any energy left to devote to being mad at Schwab anymore. Glint surveys don’t accomplish any change whatsoever and anything below a ‘5’ just puts a target on you and your manager’s back. Employee feedback regarding these things is ignored, obviously. I’ve grown numb because that’s how I’ve learned to survive here (I sure do miss TDA lol). It’s bad for my health to stress about what they’re gonna pull next and better to just drone along, towing the line

I’m just spent in the frustration dept. I need this job, I need the money… If that means going in 4 days a week, so be it. BUT if they pull this again with RTO5 and get rid of sabbatical, I have absolutely no reason to stay.

If the end goal was employee submission, I guess they’ve won. Some sorry sh-t to say the least. I used to suggest meaningful changes and ways we could improve things all the time. I used to give this job everything I had and produce at a high level. Now, I just do my work and wait for the weekend… what’s the point, ya know?

@OP you mention extra $$s on daycare. You watch your children at home while you work?

My manager is fully remote but he is always checking to ensure we are coming to office.

@ba I take issue with this point: The company cares enough to provide information to their people and potentially prevent some from making financial commitments such as buying a certain house or vehicle that might otherwise put them in a bad situation.
The date they are using is 7/1/2025 from Workday addresses. There was not a chance to allow people to end contracts or plan in advance. I suspect the March date is not for employees, but to get logistics and reporting in a row. If only I could believe it was from good intent, but how can we kid ourselves anymore?

@ba Agreed on the advanced notice part. That is nice they give us time to prepare, like I said not all bad. I am grateful to work here and just want things to get better. It’s refreshing to disagree with someone in a respectful way. Wish you and your family the best as well

@b7 I appreciate your thoughtful response. To your last point, I believe most don't see how much leadership truly cares. Giving this much advance notice is not common. The company cares enough to provide information to their people and potentially prevent some from making financial commitments such as buying a certain house or vehicle that might otherwise put them in a bad situation. There are many companies where you might just show up one day and receive sudden bad news. I wish the best for you and all others.

@b6 While I appreciate the relative courtesy in your response, I disagree. Expressing frustration isn’t ’spreading negativity’ nor does my unhappiness with the state of things mean I don’t belong here. Just because I am frustrated doesn’t mean I’m not grateful to have a job in this
market.

Years and years of trying my best only to be rewarded with pizza parties and 2.5% raises has made me apathetic. Years of dealing with outdated and archaic systems that don’t function half the time has made me jaded. Years of flip flopping on issues like RTO and literally misleading employees (with no regard) has made me understandably frustrated with this company’s leadership. At some point, you have to go into “survival mode” to stay sane. I still perform well, but there’s literally ZERO point in giving my all when my raise will be the same. Things will stay the same. Talking points and corporate updates will have the same, out of touch messaging.

Schwab is not the worst company, it’s actually a good place to work in a lot of ways… but as employees, we have a right to be heard and considered when decisions like this our made. Shouldn’t we all want to make our workplace/company better for everyone? Not just shareholders and the EC?

When leadership shows that they care about us, I'll put in more effort. Until then, it’s honestly a waste of breath. But yeah… there’s still bills to be paid and mouths to feed. So I’ll keep on working here, hoping things get better in vain. I won’t be licking any boots tho

I absolutely understand not wanting to lose one day a week of work from home. If this is the nail in the coffin for you, it's probably not the right place for you and it's probably better for everyone if you found employment elsewhere vs. being unhappy and spreading negativity. A lot of people on here need a hard reality check of what you receive in return for what you do. You have no idea how many people would loce a chance just to get in the door, but you've lost sight of that. Step back, and look at the big picture, and take inventory instead of constantly seeking a twig to turn into a bonfire. Choose to stay on and do your best or leave, no one is forcing you to show up tomorrow, so let's see how much passion you actually have on this topic.

It’s upsetting and demoralizing for many of us. To be honest, the nature of my work will always have those of us who aren’t local. For that reason, I cannot understand this blanket decision as though every business unit operates identically. A more nuanced path forward could have resulted in far less frustration. In fact, if their decisions around RTO were truly strategic, then they should truly invest in CRE. They really don’t care.

@a8 The sabbatical is a benefit. Hybrid workplace “flexibility” is a benefit. Just like pto and healthcare. Take away what makes Schwab unique as an employer and it’s easier to consider other offers/opportunities as they come up. I had several job offers with higher pay come up this year, but they were a much farther commute. I stayed bc of my sabbatical and because I like my manager/team. More money doesn’t always equal better as well.

Take away sabbatical, take away a wfh day, Schwab is just another employer now with (let’s be honest) below average pay and benefits. People now have less incentive to stay

For the EC and their underlings, their bloated salaries and oversized stock rewards just aren’t enough. They crave control along with the feeling of power over people’s time, choices, and well-being. Taking away what benefits those beneath them makes them feel powerful!

Now, this is just me, but if I’d already cashed in $7M this year, I’d feel pretty happy. But that’s not what makes these types smile. For them, nothing compares to the satisfaction of knowing they’re responsible for making people’s lives harder.

They want to watch people comply, crack under pressure, and still pretend to be grateful. Submission is the real reward! Not innovation, not productivity. Just control. Except they call it “culture.” Or “collaboration.”

And don’t worry more good times are in store for them in 2026 with RTO5 and ki-ling sabbaticals!

“ if they pull this again with RTO5 and get rid of sabbatical, I have absolutely no reason to stay.”

Well, just pay and benefits.

Same… I joined years back fresh out of college with so much hope of building a career here. Now… it’s just a job to me. Work, work, work, weekend, repeat. Place really grinds you down over time:/
