Here’s one heard at the water cooler: this layoff is priming the pump to look as cheap as possible for an impending acquisition. By BP? Is that even possible? Seems monopolistic.

You have this backward. After HESS is integrated CVX and Conoco are going to “merge” which will put the new company on par with Exxon. CVX ramps up cash flow and offloads poor assets to be prepared to merge with Conoco.
Is that water red? It’s cool aid! Sp-t it out!
They think they can run the company with remote employees in India. Way to go work from home crowd! Thanks for leading us here!

You do what makes you look as low cost as possible and attractive to possible buyers. You attract the so called “suitors”, then you get a buyer. Then you start cutting deals. Layoffs can happen before and after.
Lol. You do layoffs after, not before a deal.
Doing it after gives you a large, easily realizable synergy target. You blow your load beforehand, and there's nothing left to cut.
BP Cant buy cvx. The only likely scenario is Bp getting picked up by shell or total
Stop drinking at that water cooler .. Now !!
