Ford planning to build EREV

Ford is copying what China has been delivered during that last 2 years. 600 to 800 miles range hybrids. Basically, hybrids with large hybrid battery that will provide at least 100 miles instead of 20 miles range. That is good that Ford is learning something good from China.

As a long time Chevy Volt owner, this pivot for Ford is ridiculous. Yes, an EREV makes a great vehicle. But there are two HUGE issues Ford is once again not taking into account:

  1. Cost: The next EREV Lightning is going to be $60k+ for the base model if Ford wants to actually make money. Assuming today's economics remain the same, which it will not.

  2. Complexity: An EREV is the best and worst of ICE and EV. When it comes time for off-warranty repairs, prepare your wallet. Ford dealers don't accept EBT.

This will become another round of billions of dollars of NRE for a small sales "win" and eventually lead to another discontinuation because consumer preferences changed again. I look forward to buying a 3-year off-lease model at 60+% depreciation though.

What a mistake. Ford is a truck company. We need to jettison all these other models and focus solely on the F-Series truck. And maybe the van as well for the Pro series.

100% gas powered. Americans want gigantic vehicles with gigantic V-8s. We need to give the people what they're asking for. You better believe that our competitors will!

You mean copying Scout?

@cm Way ahead of its time, too bad GM didn't know how to market it. Majority of customers do not what EREV is. Didn't give it a chance to play out unlike Toyota's approach (though conservative but gives it a chance to profit).

They have been planning it at least from the beginning of 2025, JF and others traveling to China. To be successful, Ford needs to roll this out quickly.

Chevy Volt was EREV. Canceled in 2021.

Erev is not a hybrid. Hybrid has gas motor connected to powertrain.

@aj, Ford wants to learn from our dear leader Elon and Doug

10 Chinese auto companies already delivered EREV since 2019 with 1300 km range. Ford should learn from the Chinese and copy the design.

@a6, not exactly. Look at the BMW i3 or the RAM with range extender that FCA failed to deliver.

So it will be F-150 Lightning, with an expensive engine added? Why would anyone pay that much when they can just buy F-150 ICE?
