Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

PSA: get your personal finances in order

What’s happening right now is despicable. It’s also a rude wake up call … no company is safe. This whole “we care about you, V Teamer” is bullsh-t. Verizon doesn’t care about you. Perhaps you’ve given the company your blood sweat and tears for the past 15 years … guess what? You’re about to get booted out. Say adios to your steady paycheck!

YOU have to protect yourself. When you have trouble paying your rent in the coming months, do you think Dan the Hatchet Man will loan you even $.50? NO!!! he’s too busy counting his millions and laughing all the way to the bank .

In a situation like the one we’re in right now, you’ll feel a LOT better knowing that your personal finances are in order.

  1. VERY IMPORTANT — establish an emergency fund to cover at least six months of your living expenses. One year would be even better. That’s how long it may take you to find a new job in this horrendous market.

  2. Pay off your high interest credit cards. Credit card debt is evil.

  3. Save for retirement. Contribute to your 401(k) and get the company match (at Verizon if you survive this RIF or at your future employer). I also love me a good Roth IRA! Tax free earnings, baby!

I’m going to stop there because I’m not a financial advisor. But you get the picture. There’s lots of good free information out there.

As for me personally, I am 99% sure that I’m on the chopping block. :( BUT I have a healthy emergency fund that will tide me over for a year, and that brings me comfort.

The ULTIMATE GOAL is financial independence (enough saved so that I could actually retire if I wanted to) … that way, I don’t ever have to be scared about losing my job EVER AGAIN.

@ah This is why I attended every one of my children's plays, concerts, breakfasts, etc. I have always had the mindset that family comes first. People put themselves in these impossible situations when most leaders will give you the green light as long as they have advanced notice. And whatever you do, make sure not to bring your concession device or laptop with you on vacation unless you're an ELT member. We aren't paid that much to give our blood, sweat, and tears to any company.

@a6 15000 layoffs while they pay Sampson and the other group leader … who were both at the helm thru all of it a 3 mill each 2yr stay on bonus … yaaaa … hanging out to dry … people look for a career not a moment in pay ….. it’s dirty and the people calling the shots and the direction of the rank and file are grabbing bonuses for their poor management and sh&t rolls downhill so the rank and file following exec leadership guidance get the ax .

If you think that any corporation really cares about their employees, keep in mind that job postings get posted before obituaries in most cases for those that die while in the workforce.

So glad I took severance last year after 21 years at Verizon what a sh.. show. They just haven’t cared for awhile now. I am sorry everyone you don’t deserve this. I am with a good company now and you don’t know how bad of a company it is to work for until you are out of it.
I just wish you all the best and hoping things work out whatever happens for all of you.

@a6 any company that makes 30B in profit and lays off 15k people after already reducing headcount by 50k over 7 years is absolutely hanging their employees out to dry. There is no reason for Verizon to do this. Just a way to pretend they are like an AI company and not a fully saturated telecom company. Also 11B$ paid out in dividends each year... why arent they cutting that if times are tough?

Thanks for putting your Dreams on hold, neglecting your health and time with Family —your ongoing sacrifice for the company helped increase the shareholder’s stock value and Executive Bonuses by a dollar. Congrats on being a good hamster and running your little heart out on that wheel to deliver whatever random BS metrics we threw at you relentlessly, but now your time is up — pack up your Shiiit and Get the F#@k out. You were never “family” just another asset to be discarded once your useful life ended.

@a7 except the get many more months of pay, healthcare, bonus, stocks. Hardly hung out to dry. For holidays 2026 maybe but not this year.

@a6 I would argue that leaving 15,000 people without jobs — right before the holidays and in a horrible job market— is hanging them out to dry.

@OP everyone should have always been doing that. Its called adulting. Layoffs su-k but they don't hang you out to dry like you're implying. Hard to find a company with a better severance package.

Anger moves you backward not forwards.

My position was eliminated a couple of years ago after serving 9 years. I can honestly that Verizon does very well with separated employees. Everything was done professionally and they took care of me right up until my last day on payroll. It’s rough the first few days but you’ll quickly find there are much better places to work. Good luck.

Just walked my dog 🐶🚶‍♂️ and learned some “incredible” corporate lessons. When he ran off chasing a squirrel 🐿️, I suddenly understood layoffs 😂. When he buried a stick, I realized that’s basically financial independence if you replace the stick with index funds 💰📈. Truly inspired by my canine career coach 🐾✨ #Leadership #RIFWisdom #Finance

No company cares about its employees. "we are a family", "bla bla bla". The company exists to serve the shareholders. So anyone who believes the nonsense the execs are spouting... yeah sorry - this week is what all public companies, all PE owned companies are about. Cut, cut, cut, so the stock price goes up. Nothing else matters. You, me, the next person, no one gives a...
