Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Word around the office is that the next wave is targeting remote folks first.

Doesn’t matter if your numbers are solid if you’re not in a hub, you’re a line item that’s easier to justify cutting. The company wants “collaboration” and “presence,” which really means they’re shrinking the map and forcing people back into buildings they can measure.

Hybrid might be safe for now if you’re tied to a hub, but full-WFH employees and anyone sitting outside the big three cities should be watching closely. Seen it before starts as “realignment,” ends as a “streamlined org.”

Of course that's what jealous people in the office would say. The reality is, the higher up the decisions are made, the more abstract, illogical and distant they will be from reality about who's doing real work. And it will be multiplied if they ask consultants to help. On its face if you aren't tied to growth, retention or creating good experiences, then you may be at risk. If you read the undertones.. it may just be cuts across the board to everyone no matter what they do.

@c4 It’s hard to believe anyone thought WFH would stay permanent, especially with the stock where it is. Being near a hub has always been the safer long-term move, particularly as Care staff functions, not just calls keeps shifting overseas. Sure, Verizon’s like every other big company — teams scattered everywhere. But that doesn’t magically make WFH the perfect setup when leadership needs things done yesterday. You can think it’s overkill, but reality tends to have the final word.

You all do realize most work from home people actually would go to an office if Verizon brought back our offices. I would but Verizon go rid of our building along with 20-30 other buildings over the last 10 years. My team is all over the country and no one lives in the same area... so going into a building to work virtually would be d-mb. Also, what is Verizon going to do fire all 12 people and keep 1 thats in a hub then backfill the 11 others or the 8 that are WFH? Its not as easy as you all think, getting rid of WFH or everything into a building would destroy workloads and knowledgeable assets already in place. Going into to an office to work with people not in the same office is d-mb, I thought all the climate change VZ activists would be protesting for protecting against my trucks carbon emissions going to an office anyways.

Anyone that is WFH, in a staff function and not near a hub/office is an easy target for HR to justify. E.g. you are WFH, in X department and Y miles from a hub or office.

They've done formulaic stuff like that before. Don't think they won't again.

The sense of entitlement among some WFH employees is unreal — many seem to think they’ll be exempt from RTO just because they were hired that way or because part of the group still works remotely. A 6–9 month notice to return or face termination is all it would take to change that mindset.

@a6 Care can stay home — the phone system tracks everything. Ops and L&D? Too bloated. The company will keep whoever’s near a hub, make them come in, and lay off the rest.

Hmm 3000 internal call takers and 2800+ are home based which is 95%+. L&D is based 99.9%, aside from the handful that train in-person. PSO has internal teams that manage the partnerships... 360 and 180 ar3 home based including some Sr directors ADs SMs ect.. so I really have a hard time believing WFH is the target. Fios wireline might be in trouble with Frontier coming on, and inside sales being outsourced to Mexico more and more.

PSO org has 40%+ of their workforce at home and internal call takers and management for internal wireless is 100% home-based, oh and CS ops is 50% home-based, also whatever is left of L&D is home-based. So I highly doubt WFH would be a cut heavily. Not to mention some offices are closing by end of year. Just because you go into an office doesn't mean you add value. I think everyone on on the cut list.
