Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Promotions here are about who you know, not what you know

You can be the best at your job and get passed over because you didn't go to lunch with the right people. I've watched clowns move up while talented people rot in place. It’s beyond demoralizing.

Worst example of this I have seen: VP in tech named RM. He promoted 2 folks to principal engineer and distinguished engineer who had written zero lines of code for Nike. The PE probably had written zero lines of code ever in their career. At least the DE understood the stack and could talk a big game. Signaled to the entire org the only way to get promoted was to buddy up to RM.

Switching gears a bit… if you’ve been promoted before, when did you start feeling like it was actually going to happen? Was it during AOP discussions, or did it just kind of come out of nowhere when your manager or skip decided to move you up?

All you need in order to be promoted is...be Indian!

You don’t get promoted at Nike if you are good what you do! Period!
Only “talkers” get nice positions!

Nike does not have career ladders. Nike operates entirely based on roles and responsibilities. Nike cares about Nike. Your concerns are your concern.

If you want a promotion you need to already be filling in that role's responsibilities. Show you are capable. Then you need to wait god knows how many quarters or years for an opportunity to open up. Then you need to beat out everyone else that is also interested.

Darling, the company is dying. When have you last seen a new team created? Outside of India, I mean. The chain of events required for a promotion is inherently broken at the moment.

Your only hope is to find an extremely toxic space with nearly complete turnover or be an extremely cheap alternative to someone expensive and on the layoff short list.

This is objectively false and misleading rhetoric. It doesn’t matter who you know.

Other factors at Nike are far more significant, and result in actual compensation improvement for an organizations leaders.

Promotions at Nike follow a rigorous process to ensure an organizations DEI metrics are met. This process ensures all are treated equally, with some treated even more equally than others.

Please keep this in mind the next time you bash our very legal and not discriminatory policies.
