Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AI at ATT

what are your thoughts on the push to use AI in our daily work? Too much? Too little? Should make our jobs easier and more efficient?

If part of your job is checking that documents match, or putting information in one system into another, or doing complex calculations under a set of fixed rules, you should be learning about AI since it will take over those functions.

However, we are a long, long way from being able to get rid of humans. We may need less humans soon, but we will still need humans. If part of your job is the above, but not all, you should be thinking about who gets kept when your team is reduced.

The only department that may be safe is compliance. Someone needs to oversee AI. Their work is a lot of interacting with people. Maybe time for a switch!

They want us to use AI but then don’t get enough Copilot licenses for everyone to use it. Perfect.

Someone said it’s the new shiny thing, and they’re correct. Which means the execs and VPs love to yammer about it.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not going away like so many shiny new things over the years.

But this forced usage of it to show that your team is “hip and with it” is ponderous. The reality is that I don’t have much use for it. I feel like I’m not allowed to say that out loud. Even when in try to use it for simple tasks I don’t feel like it’s saving me tome and I often have to fix things.

Unfortunately all AI tools are blocked, with learning deferred to outside of T. So I don’t see T innovating anything.

Our group was supposed to come up with a bunch of uses for A!. Everyone submitted their suggestions several months ago, and now nothing.

I love training my replacement! Never talks back, calls in sick, uses long term disability, has a mental health incident, a family emergency and never, ever asks for a raise or benefits.. what's not to like for your temporary employer!

Outside of very specific text and basic programming help, AI is a meme. All these executives are midwits who fell for the shiny thing again. They think they can run their companies with AI, outsourcing, H1Bs, and college kids.

We've been touting how we're using AI for 3 years now and have little to show for it. Sounds about right for T!

It helps some, but not a lot. We mostly use it to rewrite summaries and take meeting notes. It doesn’t do much more than that. I’ve tried to use it in a lot of other areas, but it can’t do the things I need it to do. Yes, they are hoping that it can be used to cut headcount, but it’s just not there. I don’t think it will be there for a long time if ever.

That is absolutely the end goal.

AI is amazing at preventing the “knowledge loss” that comes with attrition and layoffs.

You actually believe AT&T provided you a tool to make your workday easier?

The same company who is using RTO and HUBs to make you miserable is also trying to make your day easier?

AI installed on your office applications is learning EVERYTHING you do. It knows how you communicate in every scenario. It understands the tone of your Teams and email communications.

You aren’t being replaced by offshoring you are being replaced by the “tool” that is making your day easier.

the fraud dept is using it and it's flagging existing customers and turning away new customers. We use outdated info from the credit bureau's too. Nothing like having the wrong information and trying to get customers to verify info that was never correct to begin with. Could be worse. We could be using salesforce too. Oh wait , we already got on that ship. And it's sinking.

Best to get your arms around it however you can. It's definitely going to reduce headcount so be one of the users who knows, at least somewhat, how to utilize it. If this is way over your head then just get on Ask ATT and literally ask questions like a re--rd and go from there. I learned how to write python codes and create LLM models in like two days with zero coding experience.

Depends what your role is. In my role, AI helps very little. The company needs to figure out where AI is beneficial and where it is not. But that would require interest in improving processes and making everyone’s life better. That’s not the goal. The goal is to reduce headcount so that is where the effort is.
