Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

What if I don’t live near an office?

Some of my team lives in North Carolina, California, Florida… what happens to us? We’re really confused as it would not be feasible to move.

I think if you don't live within a commutible distance from the office they eventually are going to let you go but not before making your life miserable to get you to quit first. Start looking for another and if you are lucky they will lay you off as you find the new job and you can get a bit extra money out of it. Good luck. Glad I accepted the buy out earlier this year I have a better job now and working from home.

if you don’t have an office near you then there’s no issue. I had an office within 6 miles of where I live, a huge office, and it closed a few years back and moved everyone to a small rinky-di-k area about 45 minute drive but only 10 miles. If I pull that location up, it specifically says no space available. Its tiny, looks like someone's house in the middle of a neighborhood, says WellMed on the building and about 20 parking spots. So that's not happening, not to mention I don't drive outside my own county into a Metropolitan area for any job.

@hz same here. Zip to zip is almost 40 mins without traffic for me. Close to 60 with rush hour traffic.

@h0
They can track your VPN… that won’t work in the long run.

This is how they get you to quit instead of them doing layoffs. You quitting is cheaper.

@dz “Criteria used was zip code to zip code which is crazy. “. This is very interesting. I heard it was by your home zip code but is it also by office zip code (vs office address)? This may be why I have seen people post they are outside of 30 minutes but still being called RTO. If it’s truly zip to zip, people may be calculating different than the company is. Zip to zip works in my favor, but other people it would work against them.

I was thinking last time I was in the office you just swiped your ID to arrive but not when you left. 4 days a week drive down there swipe your badge then turn around and go home and work. Just a thought lol.

Definitely not rumors. People on my team received notice this past Monday that they will be required to be in office 4 days/week.

Sat through several meetings where our direct leadership tried to down play the extent of it saying "only these two areas" only to then admit that the plan from above is definitely to expand to other areas. Company is apparently studying which real estate they have with a certain concentration of employees within 30 minute drive time. They played up the drive time bit as if that's them doing everyone a favor, like "it's only a 30 minute commute."

They are not concerned about things like where the rest of your team works or even the exact nature of your client interactions, etc. Only whether there are a certain number of people within 30 minute drive of some office real estate the company is holding.

Not rumor at all. MN and DC are RTO 4 days a week if your rush hour commute is 30 min or less. Criteria used was zip code to zip code which is crazy. Decision apparently made by real estate and not HR... let that sink in!
Anyone who lives in DC knows you can get anywhere in under 30 min.

These are not rumors. We know that any functioning office that has real estate will need to be filled. So be prepared if you are the zone to go back. Even if you are considered telecommuter. Count yourself lucky if you are outside. You can also look at all of the open jobs online and they all call out now specifically, if you are within 30 miles of an office you would not be considered for telecommute position for Duluth or Minnesota, and this will expand.

i'm RTO. no one else on my team lives in MN and no one else has to commute to the office but me. it's only MN and DC that have to go back if they live within 1/2 hour drive. i live further than 30 minutes but i was still told to RTO.
