Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Honest review of Oracle!

After a few years at Oracle, I was let go, not because of performance but because of this AI nonsense. Still, I’m not surprised when I took this job, I knew this company didn’t care much about their employees, but I was happy to have a paycheck and lucky to pay my bills. I'm just very disappointed…

Below are a few takeaways:

My coworkers were amazing. Everyone was great to connect with.
Significant amount of training..
Compensation was below average, but it paid the bill.
Great healthcare.
Work from home.

The negative:
My management was mediocre. Some teams had great managers, but mine was a total disappointment. All he cared was to look better for his director.
No raise, work harder. No one get a raise.
The amount of work to meet your metric was nonsensical. Always under the g-n!
I worked over the weekend to do a great job, and that is the thank you!!
You learn a lot in the first year, but you get stuck in a role you will never move up!! Your skill get stagnant.
The manager only selects a few for a raise.
Manager control the amount of work you get and purposely try to sabotage you it seems. No transparency.

Bottom line
I'm sad I'm gone, but it's better I deal with this now, than waste another five years of my life in this company which I would have done.

I see many posts asking if the layoff will be over.
Be realistic with yourself. Oracle will lay off more people next year to fund its investment in AI. It's a high-debt company, and they need to trim peoples. All you can do is have a safe backup plan and upskill. Don't work hard for this company!

Oracle is all about cutting cost now, and to increase its stock value. Their new Ai platform is already a total mess. They don't care about their customers or improving their tool set.

Maybe I'm wrong with all of this but that my interpretation.

Wish everyone the best!!! Don't stay too long there!!!!

Agree, Money is All that Matters! Get F.I.R.E ASAP! So, you Never have to stress about AI disruptions, company layoffs and others anymore. In my opinion, money can truly bring happiness and peace of mind. Don’t take it personally; those at the top are just doing their job to Maximize Shareholder Wealth. Finally, don't worry so much about O, O is going to pull it off no matter what it takes :) 💌

If O's AI gambit doesn't pay off life at O will get even uglier. The cloud gambit never really paid off and O remains a secondary IaaS and PaaS player.

I've been there for over 25 years and learned a lot, made a lot of really good friends, and yes, it did pay the bills. I wouldn't trade those years there for anything.

In that time there I've been blessed with great managers but I did hear that there were some duds managing people, law of averages I guess. So raises were infrequent. The last one I got was two or three years ago and my manager was apologizing for it being so small, I'm like "are you kidding? I wasn't expecting anything at all, this is great, thank you!" It all boils down to what is allotted to them to budget with. If they got more money, they'd generally share it with their directs. One or two directs got a raise one year, if the manager got extra money the following year, they'd give the raises to whoever didn't get one the previous year. At least I was told this by a couple of managers. Good people.

IT companies - and probably the rest of Biz - are all like this and have been since the start of the Dot.com era and before. Oracle has great tech. If they can't build it they'll buy it. It's a great company to have worked at too. My time there was once of the best learning experiences of my life. I just knew to leave Oracle before it left me. When I was the the average longevity was 18 months. I left after 4 years. Seems the company liked to shed its skin every couple of years or so regardless of anyone's performance or the amount of money they brought in. It's just 'who' they are.

Don't be upset that you're treated as expendable infantry. Next time do your research on the company that offers you a job. Understand their culture. Had you known to do this with 'O' you wouldn't feel wounded now. Biz does NOT care about you and once you believe they do you're already in deep trouble. If your manager tries to make you feel like you're important to to Biz then don't buy into it. Either they're lying to you or they're deluded themselves. It's not personal and you can build some excellent relationships and knowledge. That's great and that's what you need to do. Always look forward and earn as much as you can and enjoy the experiences. Just don't fall into the trap that any of theses places are your family and will take care of you and your future. It's a job and you do not own anything or are entitled to profits or anything else long-term.

I suggest you pick up a good book on how Private Equity works and what happens with those firms. It'll be time well spent educating and preparing yourself for the ugly truths in our world. Remember it's a business first and foremost and money is all that matters. It still doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself, earn and make long-lasting friendships. There's always a positive side if you prepare yourself mentally and physically to find it and live accordingly

I sincerely wish you all the best and a happy future.
