Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

2 Junior + AI > 1 Senior

It’s so painfully obvious that Dell believes they can layoff older, more experienced senior talent to replace them with fresh out of college students with no experience PLUS AI.

I had a leader tell me they were offered to replace 1 senior role with 2 junior roles.

Dell is going to over pivot here. SalesChat cannot replace years of experience. SalesChat is NOT as well tuned as leadership believes. I realize this is a trend across all industries but I can’t wait to see it backfire.

@ae solid analogy.
What could go wrong is very real lost opportunity.
And not the transactional sales that AI can probably assist, but the big deals that are at the foundation of $100B.

and let's not forget, replacements have zero loyalty. Be it generational or coming into a company culture that doesn't allow them to feel invested. Dell will have a revolving door for the next 5 years at least before the next overpaid management consulting firm comes in and takes tens of millions of dollars to tell them retention is important. The leftover "leadership" will translate that to pizza parties and upgrading the video game consoles in the campus playgrounds.

@OP SalesChat helps but it is very inferior compared to copilot. 80% of new hires are about 20% as productive as the experts they replace….SalesChat can’t makeup for more than 10% of gap which ignores the increased productivity of the experts that is fired……but d-mb dell don’t care about productivity

One description I have heard over and over from people I respect is that the data shows that AI offers minimal benefit to experts, but is capable of rapidly improving the performance of beginners to be "very good". I would expect that Dell would be targeting exactly this - shed expensive experts, us AI to level up a bunch of low cost beginners.

Jumping out of a plane with no parachute praying that AI figures out how to create soft landing. What could go wrong???
