Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

What Amazes Me…

So many employees refused to learn AI skills and adjust.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they were monitoring token usage and decided LRs based on people not even trying to adapt and modernize their skillsets.

self-inflicted stupidity to not adjust to the future.

I was an early user of AI. Taught my team AI. Gave presentations at influential meetings about AI. Have 5 patents in AI going back to 2020 in AI. Top performer. Manager left. I hit LR’d. You are just a number. Your skills don’t matter, your connections do at Cisco. They just need people to keep the cogs moving.

Praising AI and ELT won’t make you a millionaire, bootlicker.

@a3 As a FLM I can confirm there is a dashboard that identifies when someone is using AI, but it's not accurate.

I hit usage limits because I adapted too well. But let's be honest: the goal wasn't a more 'modern' workforce; it was a cheaper one. You can't 'skill' your way out of a corporate strategy focused on offshoring.

The premise that employees 'refused to learn' is a weak cover for a hollowed-out department. It’s exactly that kind of mindset that has traded years of architectural excellence for a discount rate. Maybe the reason so many elite engineers have been let go or moved on isn't a lack of AI skills—it's that exceptionalism is no longer a requirement for Cisco engineering, so long as the labor is cheap.

@a2 AI is a future.
Everyone will have to adapt or will stay behind in the dust.

Sooner or later it will evict all old school devs.

You can choose which way do you prefer.

I will say our leader mentioned they are monitoring our AI usage both daily and weekly. Not because they want to but because they have to and they report it back up to their direct reports. They cannot see what we are doing with AI apparently but they can see how often we are logging in and using AI! I would not doubt this will be a big part of the reviewing who’s in and who’s out. The next 24 hours will be the big who’s got the axe or not. Hoping everyone the best of luck. 🤞. We’re going to need it.
