Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Anything new on potential layoffs?

I'm not liking the quiet, feels too much like a storm is brewing.

I'm not bothered by the lack of communication when letting people go.

If it were my company, I wouldn't do any different. I wouldn't lie and say that they retired; I would just say as little as possible.

If it were my company, I would be obligated to give an honest day's pay for an honest day's work. I would feel no obligation to explain why anyone leaves.

Some people are stupid -- and I would not feel responsible for what they believe.

Some people are smart. They see what is going on, and take action.

And if their action reduces headcount -- well, that fits the plan.

@s7 People often are stupid.

But that aside you make it sound like emails bouncing is some frequent occurrence resulting from the grand conspiracy.

@aw Really??? They just want to make you believe that people are leaving on their own. Of course that is if they even let people know when people are gone. They enjoy letting folks find out people are no longer employed by letting you email folks and get your emails bounced back.

Back in previous years when people left of their own accord or otherwise it was communicated with relevant teams etc. now you just have wait and find out. Part of the charm of doing your everyday tasks… oh wait I need to contact so and so… let me call or email… oops… email bounces back or they aren’t in the directory anymore… must have left on their own. Or my favorite joke, when they email and say on a Monday morning, “So and so decided to retire…” yup they just decided over the weekend they were done.

People aren’t stupid.

To maintain its profit margin, SAS must keep up with inflation

But there is no inflation. If anything, prices are down - indicating deflation.

@OP Regardless of what the future holds at SAS, senior to mid-level management project an image of confusion and lack of direction.

I was made aware that several people with the title of email deliverability specialist were laid off this week. I believe they reside in sales/sales operations.

The elephant in the room appears to be that many senior directors, directors, senior managers have been demoted one level. Most still have the same role and have taken on more work, employees, etc. Nobody yet has said anything or given a reason this has been done. I guess typical SAS cloak and dagger work by the execs

@bd. Nice try.

A job at IBM - a job, not a religion.
A job at Red Hat (now IBM) - A job, maybe a religion.
A job at SAS - A religion.

Do not be a blasphemer to this all powerful religion! Your High Priests and Priestesses have earned it!!!!

••• have a right to rage about those who produce no revenue yet are protected

The Art Department, like the NC Museum of Art, is a personal charity of the owner and his wife. It is one way they do good. They also donate to education and other causes. So I never had a problem with Art Department.

  • Other* instances of favoritism were stupid, and some were immoral. Competent people were laid off or pushed out, while incompetent people were allowed to remain. Managers were allowed to abuse their employees, with no correction by HR. These types of favoritism hastened the decline of a once-great company.

But the Art Department? Everyone should donate to their favorite charities.

have a right to rage about those who produce no revenue yet are protected

Sure, but the owner has a right to do whatever he wants with respect to the business and if that includes favoritism, then that is his right. The workplace need not be fair in every way you deem or desire.

"What is the fascination with referencing the 'Art Department' on every post?"

Fascination doesn't factor into it.

Those who produced revenue yet got laid off have a right to rage about those who produce no revenue yet are protected.

@b1 surely you get the fact that excessive repetition of a silly statement carries absolutely no humor. If not, maybe reference the previous comment with comparison to a ten year old continually delighted by fa-t jokes. . . . .

There have been quiet cuts happening, as well as some people self-selecting to leave. Quite the shake up seems to be happening around here. There might not be a need for layoffs if people keep leaving on their own.

@a2 What is the fascination with referencing the 'Art Department' on every post? It reminds me of a ten year old child being thrilled with fa-t jokes???? Grow up and give it a rest.

Has there been any hints regarding total revenue for 2025 yet?

To maintain its profit margin, SAS must keep up with inflation -- either by growing revenues or cutting expenses.

Inflation runs 2-3% annually. If revenues don't grow, that's 250-350 people.

There have been no layoffs in the Art Department, which is safe.
